Why containment is done without tape
Tape on a customer’s wall lifts paint, marks paper and leaves adhesive. On a restoration or remediation job you are already there because something went wrong — creating a second defect while you fix the first is how a job turns into a claim.
A pole-and-rail system puts pressure against the surface instead of adhesive on it. It also goes up in minutes and comes down in minutes, which matters when containment has to be built and rebuilt around a working building.
A barrier is only as good as its edges
Containment under negative pressure fails at the gaps, not in the middle of the sheet. Air takes the easiest path, and a 20 mm gap along a ceiling line will carry more air than the rest of the barrier combined — which means dust, spores or odour going exactly where you promised they would not.
Seal the top, seal the sides, and check the barrier is drawing inward once the air scrubber is running. A barrier that bows toward you is not sealed.
Why six poles
Two poles hold a barrier across a doorway. Six lets you build a proper room seal — a barrier across an opening, a second barrier as an airlock, and spares for an awkward ceiling line. On a mould or asbestos-adjacent job an airlock is not optional, and it is the reason most operators outgrow a two-pole kit quickly.
Important: a ZipWall barrier is containment equipment, not a compliance certificate. Where the work is regulated — asbestos, licensed mould remediation or a scope that specifies containment construction — build the enclosure to the regulator, hygienist or scope requirements. CCW makes no claim that a ZipWall kit alone satisfies any Australian code or standard.
Setting Up a Pole Barrier
- Check the floor and ceiling where each pole will stand — sound plaster or a structural ceiling, not a loose tile or light fitting. On vinyl, polished stone or sealed timber, fit GripDisks to the feet.
- Lay the sheet out and place the first head plate at the top corner, with the plastic sandwiched between the head and the non-skid plate.
- Raise the pole, extend it to the ceiling and compress the spring so the pole holds under load. Repeat along the barrier line.
- Seal the ceiling line with Tight-Seal rails and the wall edges with Side-Seal clamps where the job needs a proper seal rather than a dust screen.
- Fit a zipper for access before the sheet gets dusty, then open it with the zipper cutter.
- Once the air scrubber is running, check the sheet draws inward along its whole length.
Running It Under Negative Pressure
A sealed barrier is half of negative-pressure containment; the other half is an air scrubber exhausting out of the work area, such as the XPOWER X-3400, ducted outside with layflat duct where the job allows. Put a tacky mat at the zipper doorway so foot traffic does not carry dust out of the enclosure.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Complete Seal Pack add over the Zip and Seal Pack?
Two more poles, two more Tight-Seal rails and Side-Seal clamps for the vertical edges. That is what lets you build an airlock and seal against walls without tape.
Is one pack enough for an airlock?
For a small airlock at a single doorway, usually — six poles give you the main barrier plus a second barrier a short distance inside it. Larger or more complex layouts need more poles and sheeting. Send us the layout and we will work it out.
Is the sheeting fire-retardant?
Not stated for the kit sheet. If a site or scope requires fire-retardant sheeting, ask us before the job.
What ceiling height does it suit?
Up to 3.8 m with the standard poles. ZipWall Super-Tall poles cover higher ceilings but are not listed by CCW online — ask us.
