Repair work is where a cleaner stops being a cleaner and becomes the person who saved the customer a re-carpet. A burn, a pet tear or a lifted seam is a small job with a large perceived value, and most of it is done with half a dozen hand tools.

It is also the work that turns a one-off clean into a relationship. Nobody rings the carpet layer back for a spot clean; they ring the person who fixed the doorway.

How to choose

The knee kicker is the tool that does the structural work. Re-stretching a rippled carpet is what fixes the complaint permanently. Trimming and patching without re-tensioning puts the problem back within months.

Napping shears and carpet shears cut differently. Duckbill napping shears trim pile flush without scalping the backing — that is a finishing tool. A carpet shear cuts through the carpet. Using one for the other's job shows in the finish.

A syringe is for adhesive, precisely placed. Repair adhesive applied by syringe goes under a seam or a lifted edge without spreading into the pile where it will stiffen and discolour.

Keep the repair kit in the van, not the workshop. These jobs are almost always spotted during a clean. The upsell only happens if the tools are there.
