Briggs & Stratton
A truckmount is an engine with cleaning equipment bolted to it. When the Vanguard stops making rated power the blower and the pump go with it, and the van is off the road until the part lands. Engine service parts are the least interesting line CCW carries and the one that keeps the most operators earning.
This page is the Briggs & Stratton service and wear range — filters, gaskets, seals, ignition, starting, charging, cooling and fuel components. There are no complete engines here. Lines run from a $4 screw to a $693 starter motor.
Applications span the Vanguard sizes used in truckmount work: 16, 18, 20, 21, 27 and 31 horsepower. The air-cooled twins are represented by the 844548 ignition coil and the 808984 breather assembly for 16 and 18 hp engines, and the 808816 carburettor kit and 806377 cylinder head gasket for the 21 hp. The three-cylinder liquid-cooled engines are covered by the 841491 thermostat, 809851 radiator mount, 842072 ceramic water pump seal kit, 809365 water pump belt, 809856 head gasket set, 807326 exhaust manifold gasket, 809872 31 hp exhaust gasket, 820150 three-cylinder rocker cover and the 491056 oil filter listed for three-cylinder liquid-cooled truckmounts. Two breather tubes are listed by machine — 806379 for the Boxxer 421 and 807331 for the Boxxer 427.
How to choose
Order against the engine, not the machine. Truckmount builders change engine specification between production runs, and one model badge can cover more than one engine. Read the model, type and code from the plate on the engine before ordering rather than working from the name on the side of the machine.
The horsepower in the part title is the engine rating. Most titles on this page carry it — 16, 18, 21, 27, 31 hp. It is the fastest way to filter the range, and it is more reliable than matching on the description, because Briggs uses near-identical wording across parts that do not interchange.
Air-cooled and liquid-cooled Vanguards do not share service parts. The three-cylinder liquid-cooled units carry a thermostat, a radiator and a water pump; the air-cooled twins carry none of them. If a listing mentions coolant, a radiator or a water pump, it is not for an air-cooled engine.
Some parts carry the machine builder’s number as well. Several lines list a HydraMaster part number alongside the Briggs one — 049-014 on the 492932S oil filter, 057-201 on the 809856 head gasket set, 078-207 on the 842072 water pump seal kit. If you are working from the machine’s parts manual rather than the engine’s, search on that number.
Buy the set if the engine is coming apart. The 842658 engine gasket set and the 809856 head gasket set cost less than the labour of a second teardown when one gasket turns out to be marginal.

Technician’s note
Nearly every wrong-part call we get starts the same way — the old part comes out, it gets held up against the photo on the page, and it looks right. Briggs gaskets, seals and washers are close enough across engine families that eyeballing it proves almost nothing; the difference is often a few millimetres or a bolt spacing. Get the model, type and code off the engine plate and order against those.
