Spotting Chemicals
Most spotting failures are not caused by a weak product. They are caused by reaching for the wrong one. A solvent does nothing to a tannin stain, an alkaline spotter smears mineral oil, and hot water on blood bonds the protein into the fibre for good. The spot is rarely the hard part. Working out what it is before you open a bottle is.
Nearly every spotting job reduces to the same decision. Identify the soil class — protein, tannin, oil, dye or particulate — then pick the chemistry family that matches it. The mechanical method barely changes: blot, tamp rather than brush, dwell, extract, repeat. What changes is the chemical.
The most useful rule in the trade is also the simplest. If a surface will not come clean, swap to the opposite end of the pH scale — alkaline to acid, or acid to alkaline. Actichem puts the hit rate on that swap at roughly 99 per cent, and it costs you nothing but a second attempt.

How to choose a spotter
Name the soil class before you name the product. Five classes cover almost everything you will meet. Protein soils such as blood, vomit, dairy and most food are organic and acidic, so they need alkaline chemistry. Tannins from coffee, tea, wine and cordial need a low-pH tannin remover. Oil and grease need solvent. Dyes need an oxidiser or a reducer. Dry particulate needs mechanical work, not chemistry. Temperature is part of the diagnosis as well — blood is the one case where hot water is the mistake, because heat denatures the protein and locks it to the fibre.
Cooking oil and mineral oil are not the same job. Cooking oils and fats are organic and acidic, so an alkaline product such as a protein spotter will shift them. Motor oil, grease and other mineral oils contain no water and therefore have no pH at all, which is why pH-based chemistry cannot touch them — they need a solvent such as POG, Citrus Gel or Solvent Clean. That makes a failed attempt genuinely useful information: if an alkaline spotter does nothing on what looked like a food-oil mark, you are almost certainly standing on mineral oil. Apply solvents to a cloth and blot rather than spraying the carpet, or the dissolved oil simply moves deeper.
Carry both routes at a dye stain. There are two opposite ways to break a dye molecule. Oxidisers work by altering the colour molecule itself — Conquer O2 and the peroxide-based two-part kits sit here. Reducers work from the other direction and are typically metabisulfite or bisulfite based, which is the classic A and B red spotter such as Red Fix. Two-part peroxide products have taken over most of this work, but reducers are still the answer on specific red dyes of the cordial and Kool-Aid type and on some medicines. A van carrying only one of the two routes will meet stains it has no answer for, which makes this a stocking decision as much as a technical one.
Let the fibre set the ceiling. Wool is damaged by sustained alkalinity and should be returned to an acidic state after cleaning, where its dyes and fibres are most stable — which is why the wool-specific versions of the red removers exist and are worth stocking separately. Fifth-generation nylon needs solutions below pH 10 and is also sensitive to cationic chemistry. Delicate cottons and silk are the one place to leave the oxidiser in the van. Polypropylene tolerates high alkalinity but has a strong affinity for oily soil. If you cannot identify the fibre, test first.
Plan the residue before you spray. An alkaline spotter leaves alkaline residue, and residue is what pulls soil straight back to the spot you just cleaned, producing a mark that looks worse a fortnight later than it did on the day. Follow an alkaline spotter with a neutralising carpet acid rinse. Encapsulating spotters such as Conquer and Conquer O2 are the exception — their residue goes brittle as it dries and is removed by vacuuming rather than rinsing.
Two jobs in this collection sit outside the normal spotting logic. Urine starts organic but turns alkaline as it ages and the uric crystals form, which is why an acidic product such as Actichem Pet & Flood works where a general spotter will not, and why anything past a fresh accident belongs with the urine decontamination range rather than a 500 ml spray bottle. Browning is not a stain at all — it is cellulosic material wicking to the pile tips as the carpet dries — so Brownaway and the Sonitron concentrate stocked here also sit alongside the rest of the browning treatments.
What we see in the field
When someone tells us, “I’ve hit this spot three times and it still won’t move,” our first question usually isn’t how strong they mixed the product — it’s what caused the spot? Coffee, grease, rust, tannin, dye and adhesive can look surprisingly similar but need very different chemistry. One of the biggest lessons in spotting is to identify what you're dealing with before escalating the treatment; more chemical and more agitation can turn a simple spot into permanent damage.
