How to read the number

Every flat spray jet in this range carries a four or five digit number, and it tells you exactly what the jet does.

The first digits are the spray angle in degrees — 80, 95, 110, 65, 50, 15 or 05.
The remaining digits are the flow in US gallons per minute at 40 psi, with the decimal point understood. 02 is 0.2 gpm, 015 is 0.15 gpm, 03 is 0.3 gpm.

So an 8002 is an 80 degree fan flowing 0.2 gpm at 40 psi, and an 11003 is a 110 degree fan flowing 0.3 gpm at 40 psi. Spraying Systems publishes both figures against every part number.

What the numbers do at wand pressure

The 40 psi rating is a reference condition, not what you will see on a truckmount. Flow through a fixed orifice rises with the square root of pressure, so a jet run at 500 psi passes roughly three and a half times its 40 psi figure.

Spraying Systems publishes a flow range of 0.07 to 0.71 gpm for the 11002, against a rated 0.2 gpm at 40 psi — the top of that range is around 500 psi. Work on the same multiple for any jet in the range.

The fan angle changes too. For the 11002 the manufacturer publishes 98 degrees at 20 psi, 110 at 40, 120 at 80 and 123 at 200. A jet run hard sprays wider than its number suggests, which matters when you are setting jet spacing on a wand.

Jets are consumables and the wear is invisible

An orifice wears open. A worn jet passes more solution at lower velocity, which means a wider, softer pattern, more water into the carpet and less of it coming back out. It reads as poor extraction, slow drying or streaking — none of which look like a worn part.

As a working interval: replace brass jets every six months and stainless jets annually on a machine in regular use. Replace the whole set at once, not one at a time — mixing a new jet with worn ones gives you an uneven bar.

Brass or stainless?

Brass is softer and cheaper, and it wears faster. Stainless holds its orifice roughly twice as long, which is why the replacement intervals differ. On a machine that works every day the stainless jet is cheaper per month; on a spare tool that comes out occasionally, brass is fine.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know when this jet is worn out?

Measure it. Spraying Systems’ guidance is to replace a tip once its flow exceeds the flow of a new tip by 10 per cent. Catch the output of one jet into a measuring jug for one minute at a known pressure and compare it against the rated figure. A jet that is passing more than it should is not cleaning better — it is putting down more solution in a worse pattern.

Should I replace one jet or the whole set?

The set. Jets on a wand wear at a similar rate, and replacing one or two leaves you with mismatched flow across the head, which shows up as streaking. Spraying Systems make the same point in their own catalogue — replacing only a couple of worn tips invites problems.

Can I mix different jets across one wand?

No. Every jet on a head should be the same angle and the same capacity, or the solution goes down unevenly and the overlap between fans is wrong. If you want more or less flow, change the whole set to a different capacity rather than mixing.

Will this jet fit my wand?

This is the 1/4 inch connection. Check what your wand or tool takes before ordering, because the 1/8 inch tips in the same numbering will not thread in. If you are not sure, tell us the machine and the tool and we will confirm it.

Does a higher capacity number clean better?

Not on its own. A larger number puts down more solution, which only helps if your machine can heat it and your vacuum can recover it. Going up a capacity on a portable usually leaves carpet wetter rather than cleaner. Match the jets to the machine, not to the job you wish it could do.

Do I need a strainer?

Yes. At 0.5 gpm the orifice is small enough that grit, scale or chemical residue will block it, and a partly blocked jet distorts the fan before it stops flowing altogether. Keep the in-line strainer in place and flush the system through with clean water after chemical use.
