Protimeter SurveyMaster Dual-Function Moisture Meter
The SurveyMaster is the original dual-function moisture meter: pin measurement and non-invasive scanning in one instrument, so you can map the extent of a problem without marking a surface and then quantify it where it matters. This is the 2024 model, with a larger display, longer battery life and Bluetooth to the Protimeter Connect app.
Two modes, and why you need both
Non-invasive search mode
Reads to about 19 mm below the surface using radio frequency, on a relative 60 to 999 scale. Leaves no marks, so it suits finished surfaces, tiled areas and pre-purchase inspection. Surface moisture does not distort the reading.
It responds to anything conductive behind the surface, not only water — reinforcing mesh, foil-backed insulation, metal lath, pipework and wiring all read high on dry material. Confirm anything unexpected with pins.
Pin measure mode
Measures 6% to 99% WME where the pins make contact, to a maximum needle depth of 10 mm. This is the mode that quantifies moisture and tracks a structure drying day by day. Plug-in probes extend it to depth.
Reference mode
Protimeter's patented reference mode works in both pin and search modes. Measure a dry standard — known-dry material of the same construction — hold the button until the reading stores, and every subsequent reading is then displayed alongside a second figure showing how far above or below that baseline it sits.
This is the correct way to use a moisture meter on an unfamiliar building. An absolute number means little without knowing what dry looks like in that material; the difference from a dry standard means a great deal.
What is new in the 2024 model
- Larger display
- Battery life approximately three times longer, on 2 × AA
- Automatic WME calibration check every 50 power cycles
- User field calibration of the non-invasive mode
- Bluetooth connectivity to the Protimeter Connect app, with readings saved and downloaded with a time and date stamp
- Over-the-air firmware upgrade and a multilingual interface

How it compares
| Instrument | Modes | Measuring range |
|---|---|---|
| SurveyMaster | Pin and non-invasive | 6–99% WME; 60–999 relative |
| MMS3 | Pin, non-invasive, humidity, surface temperature | 6–99% WME; 60–999 relative; plus RH and temperature |
| Aquant | Non-invasive only | 60–999 relative |
| Digital Mini | Pin only | 6–99% WME |
| ReachMaster Pro | Non-invasive, 114 cm telescopic handle | 60–999 relative |
| TimberMaster | Pin only, timber-specific scales | 7.9–99% WME |
The SurveyMaster is also supplied in the Technician's Kit alongside a HygroMaster 2.
Calibration
The instrument runs an automatic WME calibration check periodically, and a check can be run at any time against the Calcheck device. For a documented conformance certificate, twelve months is a sensible starting interval, adjusted to your own work environment and quality procedures. Certification is available in Australia.
