Why Tobacco Odour Is So Persistent
Tobacco and cannabis odours result from the accumulation of sticky tobacco and cannabis residues on interior building surfaces. Residues from burning tobacco or cannabis products form films that continually release malodours. These residues have a cumulative effect. Heavy smoking over a long period of time causes stubborn and severe smoke odours. As these residues are exposed to light, warmth, and moisture, they continue to oxidise and degrade due to bacterial action. As a result, the odour becomes progressively worse.
How It Works
Tabac-Attack consists of water-soluble solvents and odour control essential oils. The solvents act as evaporative control agents and the essential oils instantly counteract tobacco- and cannabis-related smoke odours. Tabac-Attack provides lasting odour control on treated surfaces. For best results, use Tabac-Attack in conjunction with a thermal fogging procedure.
Tabac-Attack is sold as a concentrate and is diluted with water during application. Tabac-Attack can be applied as a standalone deodoriser and can also act as an additive in various cleaning solutions.
It is a counteractant, not a cleaner. Where nicotine film is visible — yellowed walls, ceilings and window frames — clean the residue off first. Tabac-Attack then treats what remains in porous materials.
Where It Fits in a Smoke Odour Job
Legend Brands' Tabac-Attack user guide (Rev D) sets out a two-step process:
- Suppression spray. Dilute Tabac-Attack and apply it directly to the surfaces coated with tobacco or cannabis residue, spraying lightly onto absorbent materials.
- Thermal fogging. Apply ODORx Thermo-55 Tabac-Attack with a thermal fogging device.
Tabac-Attack itself is a water-based concentrate for spraying and adding to cleaning solutions. It is not the thermal fog product — that is Thermo-55 Tabac-Attack, which is solvent based and used full strength in a thermal fogger only.

At 16 mL per litre, the 3.8 L bottle makes roughly 240 L of spray solution.
Application
- Sniff test first. Legend Brands notes the fragrance may irritate people with allergic sensitivity and recommends letting occupants smell the product before application.
- Spray lightly onto absorbent materials and directly onto residue-coated surfaces. The solution needs to contact the surfaces the odour is coming from.
- Test for colourfastness on an inconspicuous area of fabrics and finishes before treating them.
- Ventilate with an air mover during and after application.
- Keep clean cloths and a plastic bag for used cloths on hand, and a measuring cup for accurate mixing.
Safety
The SDS on this page is Legend Brands' US GHS SDS for product 113511, dated 8 May 2023. An Australian-format SDS is not yet on file. Read the SDS before use.
- Signal word: Warning. Flammable liquid Category 3 (flammable liquid and vapour) and skin sensitiser Category 1 (may cause an allergic skin reaction).
- Declared ingredients: dipropylene glycol (2.5–10%), isopropyl alcohol (2.5–10%), isopropylideneglycerol (1.0–2.5%), ethoxylated alcohols and d-limonene.
- Keep the concentrate away from heat, sparks, open flames and hot surfaces. No smoking. Keep the container closed.
- Wear gloves, protective clothing and eye protection (AS/NZS 1337.1). Take off contaminated clothing and wash it before reuse.
- Where ventilation is inadequate, wear respiratory protection selected to AS/NZS 1716 and AS/NZS 1715 — for example a 3M 7500 series half-face respirator with 3M 60921 organic vapour/P100 cartridges.
- Store in a cool, well-ventilated place.
- Transport: the SDS lists UN1993, Class 3, Packing Group III, limited quantity (IMDG), and air transport is not recommended. CCW's dangerous goods shipping surcharge applies.

The SDS and user guide disagree on pH and flash point. Both are shown; the SDS is the more recent document and its figures are the ones used for safety and transport.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fog Tabac-Attack?
Not in a thermal fogger. Legend Brands' process uses Tabac-Attack as the suppression spray and Thermo-55 Tabac-Attack as the thermal fog. The Tabac-Attack guide does not give ULV fogging directions, so CCW does not recommend fogging it.
Can I add it to my carpet cleaning solution?
Yes. The guide gives 1 oz per US gallon (about 8 mL per litre) of extraction or shampoo solution, and 4 oz per US gallon (about 31 mL per litre) for truck-mounted equipment.
Will it remove nicotine staining?
No. It counteracts odour. Clean the yellow film off walls, ceilings and hard surfaces first; odour left in porous materials is what Tabac-Attack treats.
Does it work on cannabis smoke?
Yes. Legend Brands lists both tobacco and cannabis smoke odour for Tabac-Attack and for Thermo-55 Tabac-Attack.
Why is there a dangerous goods surcharge?
The SDS classifies the concentrate as a Class 3 flammable liquid (UN1993, flash point 56 °C). It ships as a limited quantity with CCW's dangerous goods surcharge.
How far does a bottle go?
At the 16 mL per litre spray rate, about 240 L of solution. As a carpet-cleaning additive at 8 mL per litre, about 470 L of cleaning solution.
