Carbon is for odour, not for particles
A carbon filter adsorbs gases and odours — smoke, VOCs, the smell that lingers after a fire or a sewage loss. It does very little for particulate, which is the HEPA's job. The two are used together because they solve different halves of the same complaint.
Carbon has a finite capacity. Once it is saturated it stops adsorbing and simply becomes a restriction — and unlike a loaded particulate filter, there is no visual sign. Change it on schedule, not on appearance.

The X-3400's standard filtration is three stages: a washable nylon mesh filter, the pleated media filter and the thick HEPA. CCW also lists an H35 HEPA and CF35 carbon filter for the X-3400. XPOWER's current US listing does not describe the H35/CF35 pair, so if you are not sure which HEPA your machine takes, measure the one you are removing and ask us before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the carbon filter replace the HEPA?
No. Carbon takes odours and gases; the HEPA takes particles. Run both.
How do I know when carbon is spent?
You cannot see it. When the odour starts coming back through the machine, the carbon is saturated. On a smoke or sewage job, plan to change it rather than wait.
Will it fit a Dri-Eaz HEPA 500?
CCW lists it as interchangeable with the HEPA 500 carbon filter. Measure the filter you are replacing and compare before ordering.
