Important: Check the Position on a HEPA 500
The Dri-Eaz HEPA 500 has two pre-filter positions, and Dri-Eaz's own filters for them are different sizes — F270 first stage (16 x 16 x 1 in, MERV 4) and F271 second stage (15.75 x 15.75 x 0.75 in, MERV 8). This filter is 20 mm (about 0.78 in) thick. CCW's listing does not say which HEPA 500 position it replaces, and no MERV rating is published. Measure the filter you are taking out before ordering.
The cheap filter that protects the expensive one
A pleated media pre-filter takes the coarse load before it reaches the HEPA. Skipping pre-filters does not save money, it transfers the cost onto a filter that is many times the price. On a dusty job the pre-filter may need changing daily while the HEPA lasts the whole job.
A blocked filter does not stop filtering — it stops flowing
Air scrubbers and dehumidifiers work in proportion to the air they move. As a filter loads, airflow falls, and the machine keeps running and keeps sounding normal while its actual performance drops away. Nothing on the machine tells you. The drying log shows equipment on site; the readings show a job that has stalled.
On fire, construction dust and demolition work, check filters daily.
Changing the Pre-Filter
- Switch off and unplug the machine.
- Remove the loaded filter and bag it on contaminated jobs.
- Fit the new filter with any airflow arrow pointing towards the HEPA, and check it sits flat with no gap at the edges.
- Keep a spare box on the vehicle — on demolition and fire jobs you may use several in a day.

The X-3400's standard filtration is three stages: a washable nylon mesh filter, the pleated media filter and the thick HEPA. CCW also lists an H35 HEPA and CF35 carbon filter for the X-3400. XPOWER's current US listing does not describe the H35/CF35 pair, so if you are not sure which HEPA your machine takes, measure the one you are removing and ask us before ordering.
