The cable usually fails before the electrode does
On a hammer electrode the cable takes a shock load on every drive and is coiled, dragged and stood on between uses. It fails at the strain relief, and it shows up as readings that jump or drop out when the lead is moved. If a meter reads erratically only with the hammer electrode connected, suspect the cable before you suspect the meter.
The other serviceable parts are the electrode base and the BLD5296 insulated needles.
