When to replace the base rather than the needles
If new needles will not sit square, will not tighten, or work loose after a few drives, the base is worn. A needle that is not held firmly makes intermittent contact under hammer load, which reads as an unstable or low moisture content — the meter appears to be failing when the fault is mechanical.
The other serviceable part is the electrode cable.
