What UV Shows — and What It Does Not

Dried urine fluoresces under UV-A light, which is why a 365 nm light finds contamination you cannot see. But plenty of other things glow too — some detergent residues, optical brighteners, adhesives and certain fibres. Treat a glow as "investigate here", confirm with smell and, where it matters, a moisture meter, and map the area before you treat it.

Using It on the Job

  • Sweep the light low and at an angle across the carpet, working out from walls, doorways and furniture legs.
  • Mark the edges of each spot before you apply treatment — they are much harder to see once wet.
  • Check again after sub-surface extraction to see what is left.
  • Carry the second battery charged. A car charger adapter lets you charge in the van.

Eye Safety

Do not look into the beam or shine it at anyone's eyes. UV-filtering glasses such as the amber safety glasses for UV make fluorescence easier to see and protect your eyes on long inspections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 365 nm rather than a cheaper 395 nm light?

A 365 nm light gives off very little visible violet light, so the fluorescence stands out even with room lights on. Many 395 nm lights wash the carpet in purple and need a dark room. Our technician's guide compares the two.

Can it mount on my sprayer?

SOS design their sprayers to carry the UV light — see the SOS G3 and SOS Penguin.

Can I use generic 18650 batteries?

Use good-quality cells of the same type and charge them in the kit's charger. Mixed or damaged lithium cells are a fire risk.
