Every carpet cleaner has had the same conversation. The client points at a patch near the hallway and says the dog had an accident there once, months ago. You clean it, you leave, and a week later the smell is back and the client is on the phone.
The problem was never the patch they pointed at. It was the four other spots they never knew about, and the fact that the contamination went a good deal deeper than the surface.
An ultra violet UV light is the cheapest tool that solves this, and it changes how you quote as much as how you clean.
What a UV light actually shows you
Dried urine fluoresces under ultraviolet light. The salts and organic compounds left behind after the moisture evaporates absorb UV and re-emit it as visible light, usually a dull yellow-green. In a darkened room, a contaminated area that is completely invisible under normal light will show as a distinct glowing patch.
What else fluoresces. UV is a detection tool, not a test. Several things will glow and mislead you if you assume everything bright is urine: optical brighteners in laundry detergents, some synthetic fibres and backings, petroleum residues, and certain mineral deposits in hard water staining.
The distinguishing feature of urine is usually the colour and the shape: a dull yellow-green, with soft irregular edges and often a heavier ring at the perimeter where the liquid spread and dried. Optical brighteners tend to be brighter, bluer and follow the shape of a cloth or a spray pattern.
Confirm with your nose and a moisture meter where it matters. UV tells you where to look, not what you have found.
365nm or 395nm: the specification that explains the price
This is the part most buying guides skip, and it is the single most useful thing to understand before you spend money.
395nm is what you get in most inexpensive multi-LED torches, including the common 51-LED units. The wavelength sits close to the edge of visible light, so a large part of what the lamp emits is visible purple. That purple floods the surface you are inspecting and competes with the fluorescence you are trying to see. These lamps work, but they need a properly darkened room, and weak contamination can be lost in the glare.
365nm sits further into the ultraviolet, so far less visible light escapes. The contrast is dramatically better. A quality 365nm lamp shows contamination without the purple wash, and with enough output behind it, in ordinary room lighting.
The SOS UV Black Light Kit is a 10 watt 365nm lamp with an aluminium reflector and glass lens, rated IP66, running around three hours per charge on two 18650 cells. Stain Out Systems state it reveals staining without needing to turn the lights off.
What this means in practice. The two tools do different jobs rather than competing. A 395nm LED torch is a van tool: compact, cheap enough to keep one permanently in the kit, fine for a spot check or confirming a specific area in a darkened room. A 365nm kit is a survey tool: it covers whole rooms, reveals contamination a torch will miss, and works while your client is standing next to you with the lights on.
If your work is occasional spot treatment, the torch covers it. If urine decontamination is a regular revenue line, the kit pays for itself in accurate quoting alone.
The visible stain is not the contamination
This is the part worth explaining to clients, because it is where the money is.
Surface cleaning will not fix it. When an animal urinates on carpet the liquid passes through the pile, through the backing, into the underlay and frequently into the subfloor. Extracting the carpet face removes the visible mark and leaves the reservoir underneath untouched. Warm, humid conditions reactivate it and the smell returns.
The area needs mapping before you quote. It is common for the contamination underneath to be two or three times the diameter of what you can see. A job that looks like one spot in the hallway may be six spots across three rooms. Quoting on the visible evidence means quoting on a fraction of the work.
Repeat offenders return to the same place. Animals scent-mark where they can smell previous marking. Untreated contamination is why the same square metre keeps being used.
How to inspect a room properly
Darken the room as far as practical. With a 395nm torch this is essential, since daylight will wash out everything. With a 10W 365nm lamp you have far more latitude, but drawing the curtains still improves what you can see. Let your eyes adjust for a minute or two.
Work systematically and hold the light low. Grid the room and cover it in overlapping passes rather than wandering to the spots the client mentioned. Rake the light across the pile at an angle rather than pointing it straight down, since contamination in the base of the pile shows better that way.
Mark as you go. Painter's tape, chalk or photographs. You will not remember six locations once the lights are back on, and photographs taken under UV are persuasive evidence for the client.
Check beyond the floor. Skirting boards, the base of curtains, sofa skirts, the legs of furniture and the edges of doorways. Male dogs in particular mark vertical surfaces, and those are almost never on the client's list.
Wear amber glasses, and bring a spare pair. Amber lenses filter the residual visible violet the lamp emits, which raises contrast considerably. Carry a second pair for the client: if you are walking them through the inspection, they need to see what you are seeing.
What to do once you have found it
Finding contamination is the first half. Treating it properly means getting product to where the urine actually is, which is generally below the carpet face.
That usually means sub-surface injection or a saturation approach rather than surface application, followed by extraction, and in some cases lifting the carpet to treat or replace underlay. Enzyme and oxidising treatments both have a place depending on the age and severity of the contamination.
Re-inspect under UV after treatment. It is the simplest verification you have, and it gives you something concrete to show the client.
Using UV in front of the client
Showing a client the true extent of contamination before you start reframes the conversation. They stop comparing your quote to the cheapest price for cleaning three rooms and start understanding they have a specific problem in a specific area. The quote makes sense because they have seen the evidence.
This is also where a 365nm lamp earns its price. Asking a client to stand in a blacked-out room is awkward; showing them the problem with the lights on is not. Showing them the same area after treatment closes the loop, and that is the difference between a client who accepts your invoice and one who recommends you.
Common questions
Does urine always show up under UV light? Not always. Very fresh urine, heavily diluted contamination, or areas that have been thoroughly cleaned may fluoresce weakly or not at all. UV is an excellent survey tool, but a negative result is not proof that an area is clean.
What is the difference between 365nm and 395nm? 395nm emits a large amount of visible purple light, which competes with the fluorescence you are looking for and demands a dark room. 365nm emits far less visible light, giving much better contrast, and with sufficient output, usable results in ordinary room lighting.
Will a phone torch or a party blacklight work? Poorly. Phone UV apps do not emit ultraviolet at all. Novelty blacklights are typically 395nm or higher with very low output.
Is UV light dangerous? The UV-A wavelengths used in these lamps are the lowest-energy part of the ultraviolet spectrum and are considered low risk in normal use. Avoid looking directly into the lamp, and use amber glasses for extended inspections.
Can I use it on upholstery and mattresses? Yes, and it is often more revealing than carpet because the contamination stays closer to the surface. Mattresses in particular tend to show a great deal that the owner would rather not know about.
