What is Sub Surface Extraction?
Sub Surface Extraction is used by professional carpet cleaners to thoroughly remove contaminants, liquids, and odours that have soaked into carpet padding and upholstery. SOS describe it as the best method, short of removing carpet, for flushing out the true cause of odours and reappearing spots.
How to Use It
- Find the contamination — a UV light shows urine you cannot see.
- Saturate the area with your treatment so it reaches the backing, the underlay and, if needed, the subfloor. Allow the product's dwell time.
- Connect the tool to your vacuum hose, press it firmly onto the carpet and extract until the flow runs clear.
- Rinse if the treatment label calls for it, extract again, and dry the area.

Hand Tool or Floor Tool?
The hand tool suits pet spots and small areas — one or two spots in a room. For larger areas, or when you want to stand on the head for a better seal, step up to the SOS PRO or the SOS PRO with Flush Kit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it work on upholstery?
SOS mention upholstery in their description of sub-surface extraction. On upholstery, test first and use as little solution as will do the job — cushions and fillings dry slowly and some fabrics water-mark.
Will a domestic wet-and-dry vacuum be strong enough?
It will fit, but recovery depends on the vacuum. A professional extractor or truckmount pulls far more from the underlay than a domestic unit.
Does it replace removing the underlay?
No. It is the next best thing short of removal for pet urine. Underlay saturated with contaminated floodwater is a different decision.
