Protimeter HygroMaster 2 Flooring Kit

A complete kit for measuring relative humidity inside a concrete slab by the in-situ probe method, which is the test behind ASTM F2170 and BS 8201 / BS 8203. Everything needed to prepare, sleeve and read the hole is supplied, along with the HygroMaster 2 instrument for the ambient readings the same standards require.

Why this kit rather than single-use probes

The mini Hygrosticks are reusable. Single-use in-situ probes are discarded after one test, so on a floor requiring three tests per 100 m² the consumable cost repeats on every job. The sleeves and probes here are replaceable independently, and only the sleeves are consumed in normal use.

How the in-situ test works

  1. Drill a 19 mm hole to the depth the standard requires — 40% of slab thickness for a slab drying from one side. The supplied depth stop sets it repeatably.
  2. Clean the hole with the wire brush. Dust left in the hole changes the reading.
  3. Fit an adjustable sleeve and cap it, then leave the hole to equilibrate. ASTM F2170 requires 24 hours.
  4. Insert a mini Hygrostick using the insertion tool, allow it to equilibrate, then read it through the extension lead.
  5. Record ambient relative humidity and temperature at the same time — the standard requires both.

Important — the mini Hygrostick extension lead is not optional

Mini Hygrosticks cannot be read without the mini extension lead (BLD5806). It is supplied in this kit. If you buy additional mini Hygrosticks for another instrument, you need that lead as well — the full-size Hygrostick lead (BLD5802) will not do the job.

Consumables and replacements

Surface testing is a different test

A humidity box measures equilibrium relative humidity at the slab surface without drilling. It is non-destructive and quicker, but it reports the surface condition rather than moisture held deeper in the slab. If a flooring manufacturer's warranty specifies in-situ relative humidity to ASTM F2170, a surface reading will not satisfy it. Confirm which test the warranty requires before you start.

Hygrostick or Quickstick

The instrument takes two interchangeable sensors and they are not equivalent.

Hygrostick (POL4750) Short Quickstick (POL8751)
Humidity range 30% to 98% RH 0% to 99% RH
Below 30% RH Will not read Reads to 0%
Best for Sustained high humidity, equilibrium RH in concrete, harsh environments General ambient work, fast spot readings, drying verification
Response Slower, stable under prolonged wet conditions Fast

If you are verifying that a structure has finished drying, ambient readings often sit below 30% RH and a Hygrostick will not report them. If you are leaving a sensor in a sleeved hole in a slab, the Hygrostick is the sensor built for it. Both are consumables: buy Hygrosticks singly or in a 5 pack, and Quickstick ST sensors singly.
