Actichem Deozyme 500ml

Deozyme is Actichem's enzyme odour digester - the one you reach for when the smell is coming from something organic that is still there. It blends four active enzymes and Bacillus organisms with a patented odour neutraliser, so it digests the source rather than covering it. This listing is the 500 ml trigger spray pack. 

Important - this is a concentrate, not a ready-to-use spray. The 500 ml pack is supplied in a trigger spray bottle so you can mix and apply from the one container, but the liquid in it is concentrate. Dilute it 30-60 ml per litre of water and fill the bottle with the working solution. Spraying it neat wastes product and leaves unnecessary residue.

It is the right product for human and animal waste, spoiled food, decaying matter, necrotic tissue and sewage. It is the wrong product if the source has already been removed and you only need a fragrance.

Deozyme is a hazardous chemical under the WHS Regulations - signal word Warning, and a Category 1 skin sensitiser. It is not dangerous goods and ships unregulated. Read the safety section below before you order.

Product description

Simply cleaning an area will not remove odour molecules. Bad odours exist in the air and are trapped in fabrics, carpets and porous materials. In addition to a cleaning routine, you need an odour control strategy.

Deozyme works on two fronts at once. The patented neutraliser pairs with airborne odour molecules on a molecular level, and the quad-enzyme and Bacillus action digests the organic material producing the smell. That second half is what separates it from every other product in the Actichem odour range.

Where it earns its place

Deozyme is highly effective on most water-cleanable surfaces including synthetic materials, wood, concrete, stone, tiles and grout. It is also suitable for all wool and synthetic fibres, though pre-testing is recommended, especially on delicate fibres, to confirm dye and fibre stability and sensitivity to chemicals.

The 500 ml pack suits spot work rather than whole-job work - a vehicle kit, a single contaminated area, a callback, or trialling the product before committing to the 5 litre.

• Urine contamination - a single patch of carpet, underlay or a pet area.
• Spoiled food and waste - bins, cool rooms, waste areas.
• Trauma and decomposition work - necrotic tissue and human or animal remains.
• Sewage and Category 3 water - where the odour is bacterial in origin.
• Porous substrates - concrete, grout, timber, where the odour has soaked in and a surface clean will not reach it.

The one thing that will stop it working

Deozyme relies on live bacteria. Hot water, bleach and chlorinated products may kill the active bacteria in this product. They will not affect its odour-counteracting properties, but they will kill the digestion half of the job - which is the half you bought it for.

In practice that means: mix with cool or lukewarm water, not hot; do not refill the bottle over the residue of a chlorinated product without rinsing it out; and do not mix Deozyme with any other product.

Shake well before use. The active organisms settle.

How to use

Dilution

Add 30-60 ml per litre of water (1:16 to 1:32) depending on soil conditions.
For heavy soil conditions, up to 100 ml per litre can be added.

For the 500 ml trigger bottle, that works out at roughly 15-30 ml of concentrate topped up to 500 ml with cool water for a routine mix.

Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for substrate sensitivity to chemicals, and on sensitive surfaces pre-test for dye and fibre stability as well.

Application

1. Apply the solution to a workable area using the trigger sprayer, a sponge or a scrubber machine.
2. Do not allow the solution to dry onto the surface.
3. Agitate and allow 30 minutes of dwell time. Keep the area moist with the solution.
4. Rinse the surface thoroughly using clean water. A high-pressure or wet extraction washing system will give the best result.

A 1:100 Deozyme solution can be left as a residual on resilient surfaces for further odour removal and re-odorising activity.

At the routine 1:16 to 1:32 rate, a 500 ml pack makes roughly 8 to 16 litres of working solution.

Actichem's current safety data sheet for AP438, version 2.4 issued 11 August 2025, classifies Deozyme as a hazardous chemical under the WHS Regulations, and as non-dangerous goods under the ADG Code.

Hazard statement:

H317 is the one that catches people out. Sensitisation is cumulative and permanent. A technician who decants concentrate bare-handed a few times a week for a year can end up unable to work around the product at all. Glove up for the concentrate even though the working solution is dilute.

Personal protective equipment Actichem specify for handling the concentrate: safety glasses with side shields, elbow-length protective gloves, and overalls. Maintain adequate ventilation and avoid skin and eye contact.

Transport is a separate question to hazard. The HAZCHEM code is not applicable and the product is not regulated for the transport of dangerous goods. That is a shipping rule. It does not make the product non-hazardous in use, in storage, or on site - the safety data sheet states plainly that this is a hazardous chemical.

Deozyme, Deostor, Deofresh or Odourtak?

These four ranges are not interchangeable, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake with Actichem odour control. The question that sorts them is where the odour is coming from right now.

• Deozyme - the source is organic and still present. Waste, decomposition, sewage, spoiled food. It digests the material producing the smell. It is the only one in the range that does that.
• Deostor - the source is a specific residue, most often fire and smoke, or severe persistent odours. It is the heavy neutraliser, and several Deostor products carry a materially higher hazard classification than Deozyme does.
• Deofresh - routine carpet work. Goes into your prespray or your rinse, deals with everyday malodours and leaves a fragrance.
• Odourtak - the odour is in the air and in porous materials across a whole space. It is fogged, not sprayed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 500 ml bottle ready to use?

No. It is a concentrate supplied in a trigger spray bottle. Dilute at 30-60 ml per litre and fill the bottle with the working solution. The trigger head is there so you can apply it, not because the contents are pre-diluted.

Should I buy the 500 ml or the 5 litre?

The 500 ml suits spot work, a vehicle kit or trying the product. If you are doing decomposition, sewage or whole-room urine work, the 5 litre is the sensible pack - a 500 ml bottle makes only 8 to 16 litres of solution and a single contaminated room can use most of that.

Why does hot water matter?

Deozyme contains live Bacillus organisms. Hot water, bleach and chlorinated products may kill them. The product will still neutralise odour molecules, but the enzyme digestion - the reason you chose it over a straight neutraliser - stops. Mix it cool.

Can I use it on wool?

Yes - Actichem state it is suitable for all wool and synthetic fibres. Pre-test in an inconspicuous spot for dye and fibre stability first, especially on delicate fibres. Note that Deozyme is mildly alkaline at pH 8.5-8.8, which is worth knowing if you are working to a specification that sets a pH range.

Do I have to rinse it?

Yes, on the surfaces you are cleaning - rinse thoroughly with clean water, and do not let the solution dry on the surface. The exception is the deliberate 1:100 residual on resilient surfaces, which is meant to stay.

Is Deozyme hazardous?

Yes. Actichem's safety data sheet classifies it as a hazardous chemical under the WHS Regulations, signal word Warning, with a Category 1 skin sensitisation classification. It is not dangerous goods, so it ships unregulated, but that is a transport rule rather than a hazard rating. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling the concentrate.

Can I mix it with a sanitiser to save a step?

No. Do not mix Deozyme with any other product. Beyond the usual chemical-compatibility reasons, chlorinated and bleach-based products will kill the organisms doing the work.

Will it fix the smell on its own?

Only if it can reach the source. No deodoriser fixes an odour whose source is still sealed under something - contaminated underlay, a wet subfloor, a cavity. Deozyme is unusually good at dealing with organic material it can actually contact, which is why dwell time and keeping the area moist matter so much.
