Hel-Gel ORANGE is a citrus-based gel spotter that VacAway says will not leave a dirt-attracting residue. It dries to a crystalline powder that can be agitated and vacuumed away, and VacAway describes it as unsurpassed at removing chewing gum and duct tape residue.
It is also effective on paint, oil, grease, tar, permanent marker, mascara, lipstick and ink. The gelled consistency helps keep the product on the fibres and out of the backing, greatly reducing the possibility of delamination.
Important: Read the SDS Before Use
The SDS on file (The Cleaner Image, US format, revised 2 April 2024) lists dichloromethane (under 8%) and orange terpenes. Signal word Warning. Dichloromethane is classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) and the SDS notes reproductive effects. The SDS says:
- For use by professional carpet cleaners only.
- Rubber gloves and goggles must be worn.
- Use with adequate ventilation, or a respirator with organic vapour filters if necessary. In Australia, select respiratory protection to AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716.
- Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing; wash thoroughly after handling.
- Dispose of waste as hazardous waste in line with local regulations.
An Australian-format SDS is not yet on file; we have asked the supplier for one.
How to Use
Applications
May be used on all colourfast synthetic carpet including nylon, polypropylene and polyester. May be used on commercial, residential, looped, cut pile, cut and loop, plush and similar constructions.
Directions
- Test all carpeting for colourfastness before applying any carpet cleaning product.
- Shake well before using. Apply to a clean, white absorbent cloth and blot the spot, or apply directly to the spot, sticky tape residue and so on. Blot the area, working from the outside towards the centre.
- Rinse from carpet with water and blot dry.
For hardened gum, allow 2 to 5 minutes dwell time, scrape up excess gum with a blunt object such as a bone scraper, then reapply to remove any remaining residue. Rinse from carpet with water and blot dry.
Note: to keep its gel-like consistency, do not allow it to freeze. If freezing does occur the product is still just as effective as before; however, it will be much thinner and more care will be needed to ensure it does not get into the carpet backing and cause delamination.
Tip: to remove stubborn paint spots, work in a little Hel-Gel ORANGE, being careful not to get it into the carpet backing, and allow it to dwell for five to fifteen minutes. Add a bit more product, then blot up the dissolved paint with a towel or rinse. VacAway says that even if your technician forgets to rinse, Hel-Gel ORANGE will not cause the rapid re-soiling seen with other citrus-based products because it dries to a crystalline powder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it on wool?
VacAway lists synthetic carpets only. Do not use it on wool or other natural fibres without checking with us.
Do I have to rinse it?
The directions say to rinse with water and blot dry. VacAway notes it dries to a powder if rinsing is missed, but rinse as directed.
Why is gel better than a liquid on gum and tape residue?
The gel stays on the fibres where the residue is, rather than running into the backing. Less product in the backing means less risk of delamination.
What about a large gum job?
For many pieces of gum across a commercial floor, a heated gum tool such as the Hydro-Force Xtreme G2 or a gum remover such as Actichem GumGone is usually faster. Hel-Gel ORANGE suits individual spots and adhesive residue.
