Why the plastics matter on a chemical machine
Every one of these parts is what stands between coil cleaning chemistry and either the electrics or the operator. A cracked cap lets concentrate slop out in the van; a missing battery door lets chemical mist reach the terminals. Neither looks urgent and both end in a machine that is written off rather than repaired.
The cap vent matters
The cap is vented. As the pump draws water out, air has to get back into the tank. SpeedClean's troubleshooting lists a vacuum lock from a clogged cap vent as a cause of inconsistent or erratic pressure — the pump starves, surges and sounds like it is losing its prime.
Before ordering a pump or a nozzle for erratic pressure, take the cap off and clean the air vent. If the vent is damaged, or the cap is cracked or will not seal, replace the cap.

Frequently asked questions
Can I tape over a lost cap for a day?
We would not. A sealed opening blocks the vent and causes the vacuum lock described above; an open tank splashes chemical in the van.
What else causes erratic pressure?
SpeedClean lists a worn or clogged nozzle, low water or chemical, air in the pump, water that is too hot and a low battery. Check the cheap things first.
