Where it sits and what it does
The snout is the discharge outlet on a centrifugal air mover — the shaped nozzle that concentrates the airflow into a directed stream. Its grill guards that outlet.
The snout is what makes a centrifugal machine useful for the work it is designed for: getting a concentrated column of air under a lifted carpet, into a wall cavity, or along a skirting line. A damaged or missing snout grill lets that outlet be obstructed or damaged, and a deformed snout disrupts the airflow it exists to shape.
The one that gets broken
The snout projects, which makes it the part that catches on doorframes, gets landed on when a machine is dropped, and takes the impact when machines are stacked in a van.
Inspect PVC grills for cracks as well as for blockage. A cracked grill can look intact from the front and be one impact away from losing a section — and a fragment of PVC going through an impeller is a worse day than replacing a grill.
Keep it clear
An obstructed discharge is one of the named causes of an air mover that runs briefly then shuts off. Check and clear both grills between jobs.

Fitting advice
- Unplug the machine before removing the grill.
- Check the snout itself for cracks or distortion while the grill is off. A deformed snout will not hold a new grill properly and disrupts the airflow.
- Clear any fibre or debris from the discharge and housing.
- Fit the new grill with the original fixings. Do not overtighten into PVC; a cracked mounting point is a loose grill.
- Turn the impeller by hand before you power up to confirm nothing is touching.
