Check the Capacitor Before You Replace a Motor
A single-phase motor that hums but will not start, or that starts only if you help the fan by hand, is almost always a failed run capacitor, not a failed motor.
Symptoms worth checking a capacitor for:
- Motor hums, fan does not turn
- Fan starts only after a nudge: stop and unplug the machine rather than keep doing this
- Motor runs hot, or noticeably down on airflow
- Machine trips a breaker on start-up
Air mover troubleshooting tables commonly list exactly this: fan does not turn, capacitor wire broken or loose, or capacitor failed. Check the wire before you check the capacitor; it costs nothing.
A bulged, split or weeping capacitor is finished on sight. One that looks perfect can still be well below its marked capacitance. Test it; do not judge it by appearance.
Important: Match the Value to the Motor, Not the Machine
Read the µF and voltage off the capacitor you are removing, or off the motor's data plate, before you order. The same model of air mover can be built with more than one motor over its production life, and the capacitor follows the motor. We are confirming with Dry Air Technology which Tempest motors take this value.
Do not substitute on value, and do not fit a lower voltage rating. A capacitor of the wrong value runs the motor inefficiently and hot, which shortens the life of the expensive part.
Safety
Capacitors hold a charge after the machine is unplugged. Discharge it safely before handling. Photograph the terminal connections before disconnecting anything, and have the work done by a qualified person.
