Overview

Hygiena AquaSnap Total is a water ATP test, read in a Hygiena luminometer. It is designed for water and rinse water rather than for surfaces — most usefully, for checking the final rinse of a clean-in-place cycle.

What it measures

AquaSnap Total measures both microbial ATP — living cells and particulate matter — and free ATP, which is non-microbial or from dead cells. The device contains a detergent that releases ATP bound to microbial or organic matter and ATP held inside microbes, so the reading reflects the total organic load in the sample.

To separate the two: run AquaSnap Total alongside AquaSnap Free on the same water. Free measures the non-microbial fraction; the difference between the two tells you the microbial ATP. AquaSnap Free is not currently a stocked CCW line — ask us if your procedure needs it.

Why the dipper tip matters

The collection tip is designed to pick up a consistent 100 µl sample every time. That is the whole basis of a comparable water result: if the volume varies, the reading varies, and you learn nothing from the trend.

This is the practical difference between a purpose-made water test and using a surface swab in water. A swab is designed to wipe an area, not to meter a volume, and dipping one in water gives you a sample size that depends on how long it was held there.

Where it is used

  • CIP final rinse. Sample the water from the last wash of the cycle. ATP present in that water means the cycle is not removing residue, and the surfaces it just ran over are not clean.
  • Rinse water and recirculated water where organic load matters.
  • Process water checks as part of a routine monitoring programme.

The value of testing the rinse rather than the surface is coverage: the rinse water has been in contact with the whole system, including the parts of it you cannot reach with a swab.

Using it well

Sample at the same point in the cycle every time. Water ATP results are a trend, and a trend needs a fixed sampling point.

Read promptly after activation and keep the routine consistent.

Set your own limits from your own baseline. There is no universal figure. Sample a cycle you know ran correctly and work from that.

Sanitiser in the water can suppress the reading. Know where in the cycle your sample is coming from.

ATP and enzyme test devices are reagent products with a real shelf life, and that shelf life depends on how they are stored. Refrigerated storage is what preserves it.
