The Tramex Concrete Moisture Probe, The Determinator, extends the capabilities of the Tramex Concrete Moisture Encounter range, providing in-situ Moisture Content readings in a Tramex Unified Moisture Content Test Method of quantitative Moisture Content measurements in both the top 19mm (¾ inch) layer and within the body of concrete floors and slabs down to an extendable depth of up to 100mm (4").
The Concrete Moisture Probe can be used with the CME5, CMEX5 and older Concrete Moisture Encounters CME4 and CMEX2. The Determinator is supplied in a Tramex hard case with allocated space for your Tramex Concrete Moisture meter.
How It Works
The Concrete Moisture Probe when used with Tramex CME instruments operates on the principle that the electrical impedance of a material varies with its moisture content.
The CME instrument is pressed onto the CMP cradle which is pressed onto the material surface with the pins fully compressed and the probe inserted into the pre-drilled 19mm (¾ inch) hole to measure/ detect the moisture content.
The electrical impedance is measured by creating a low frequency alternating electric field between the electrodes and the probe, to a depth of up to 100mm (4”).
This field penetrates the material under test. The very small alternating current flowing through the field is inversely proportional to the impedance of the material. The instrument detects this current, determines its amplitude, and thus derives the moisture value.
Operating Procedures
The Determinator cradle should be flat on the slab surface and the Tramex Concrete Moisture Encounter placed and firmly pressed onto the cradle. The probe reads from the bottom, within the body of the slab, up to the surface.

Which Determinator kit do I need?
The three kits differ by what is in the case, not by how the probe works.
- CDK Concrete Determinator Kit — the probe and case only. No meter. Choose this if you already own a Tramex CME instrument.
- CDTK Technicians Kit — probe plus the Concrete Moisture Encounter X5 meter. The working combination for a contractor starting from nothing.
- CDIK Inspector Kit — everything in the Technicians Kit plus a Hygro-i2 relative humidity probe, calibration check plate, infrared thermometer, hole liners and extension handle. Specified where a full documented survey is required.
Which meters does the probe work with?
The Concrete Moisture Probe works with the CME5 and CMEX5, and with the older CME4 and CMEX2. If you are running something older again, send us the model and we will confirm before you order.
How deep does it read?
The probe gives in-situ moisture content readings in the top 19 mm layer and within the body of the slab to an extendable depth of up to 100 mm. That is the point of it — a surface meter alone tells you about the surface, and a slab can be dry on top while still holding moisture below.
Do I need to drill the slab?
Yes. The probe is inserted into a pre-drilled 19 mm hole, which is what allows the reading to be taken within the slab rather than at the surface. Hole liners are included in the Inspector Kit and available separately.
Is this a replacement for a relative humidity test?
No, and it is not intended to be. The Determinator gives quantitative moisture content in the Tramex Unified Moisture Content Test Method. In-situ relative humidity testing is a separate measurement, which is why the Inspector Kit includes the Hygro-i2 probe. Which one a specification calls for depends on the flooring manufacturer and the standard being worked to — ask us if you are unsure what a job requires.
