Nylon bristled spotting brush. It is the brush used to work spotting chemical down into the base of the pile, and it belongs in every professional spotting kit alongside a bone scraper and a towel.
How to Use It Without Damaging Pile
The purpose of a spotting brush is to move chemical into the base of the pile, not to scrub the face.
Tamp, and work in the direction of the pile rather than in circles. Circular scrubbing on cut pile distorts the yarn and produces a permanent bloom that is far more visible than the spot was. Distortion cannot be cleaned out afterwards, which is why the technique matters more than the brush.
Why Nylon
Nylon bristle is stiff enough to reach the base of the pile and resilient enough not to collapse in the solvents a spotting kit carries. A softer natural bristle lays over instead of penetrating; a stiffer brush risks the face yarn.

Operating Advice
- Tamp rather than scrub. The brush is a delivery tool, not an abrasive one.
- Work with the pile direction, never in circles.
- Blot between applications. Chemical worked in and left in is residue, and residue is what causes the spot to return.
- Rinse the brush between different chemistries so you are not carrying an acid into an alkaline product, or the reverse.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it on wool?
Yes, with a light hand and the correct chemistry for wool. The risk on wool is not the bristle, it is over-agitation of a fibre that felts.
Will it distort the carpet?
Not if you tamp with the pile. It will if you scrub in circles, and that damage is permanent.
Is it suitable for upholstery?
For durable upholstery, used gently. On delicate fabrics use a softer brush and test first.
Why not just use a towel?
A towel blots the surface. It does not get chemical to the base of the pile, which is where most of a spot sits.
How do I know when to replace it?
When the bristles splay and no longer stand up. A splayed brush lays chemical on the face instead of driving it in.
