Why the readings should come off the meter
Transcribing readings by hand is where survey data goes wrong — a digit transposed on site becomes a defensible-looking number in a report. Downloading them keeps the record as the instrument recorded it, with its timestamps intact. On a job that ends in a dispute, that distinction matters.
What it is for
The USB lead and PC software for downloading logged readings from an instrument that stores them. Data comes off the meter as a file rather than being transcribed by hand, which is what makes a drying log defensible.
