Protimeter humidity box for surface RH measurement

A box that seals to a solid floor and lets the air beneath it equilibrate, so surface relative humidity can be measured without drilling.

Surface box or in-situ sleeve?

They answer different questions. The humidity box measures the humidity at the surface of the slab, without drilling. A humidity sleeve set into a drilled hole measures humidity at depth inside the slab.

Deep moisture is what fails a floor after an impermeable covering goes down, so a surface reading alone is not a substitute where the specification calls for in-situ testing. Check which method your flooring specification actually requires before you commit — installing to the wrong test is a mistake that only surfaces once the floor lifts.

The box is the right tool where drilling is not permitted — post-tensioned slabs, finished floors, tenanted buildings — and for a fast comparative survey before committing to a full in-situ test.

Box or sleeve — two different tests

The humidity box measures equilibrium relative humidity at the surface of a slab. No hole is drilled, nothing is consumed, and the slab is left intact. The in-situ sleeve test measures relative humidity inside the slab at a set depth, which is what ASTM F2170 and the BS 8201 / BS 8203 family specify.

They do not give the same answer, and one does not substitute for the other. A slab can read acceptably at the surface while holding far more moisture below. If a flooring manufacturer's warranty calls for in-situ relative humidity, a surface box reading will not satisfy it — check the specification before choosing the method.
