Product Overview

Standard threaded soft vinyl cuff for 1.5 inch (38mm) vacuum hose. The threaded end screws onto the hose; the plain slip end pushes onto your wand or tool tube.

Soft vinyl is the right material here. It grips the hose helix as it is worked on, it will not gall the way a hard plastic cuff can, and it survives the knocks a hose end takes on stairs and doorframes.

Thread and Slip — Not Male and Female

Standard vacuum hose cuffs are specified as thread x slip, and getting this straight removes most of the confusion in this part of the catalogue.

  • The threaded end screws onto the vacuum hose. It engages the external helix of the hose itself, which is why it grips.
  • The slip end is a plain socket that pushes onto the wand or tool tube.

There is no male or female option on a standard screw cuff. That terminology belongs to the Flash Cuff quick-connect range, which is a different and non-interchangeable system. If someone has told you to order a "female 1.5 inch cuff", they most likely mean a Flash Cuff.

Worth knowing: there is no published thread standard, pitch or TPI for vacuum cuff threads, from any manufacturer we can find. The pitch is set by the helix of the hose, not by a fitting standard. Cuffs from different makers usually interchange, but test the joint before you rely on it.

Correction: an earlier version of this page described the cuff as slipping onto the hose and threading onto the tool. That was the wrong way round. The threaded end goes on the hose. The page has been corrected.

Cuff, Mender or Connector — Which Do You Need?

Three different parts, routinely bought in error for one another.

The one that catches people out is the PVC connector. It does not join two bare hose ends. It needs a cuff already fitted to each hose, and the barbs are there for those cuffs to slide over. So a PVC join is four parts — two hoses, two cuffs, one connector. A mender is two hoses and one mender, and nothing else.

Which end goes on the hose?

Is it male or female?

Will it fit hose from another supplier?

On the hose side, 38mm is 38mm, so almost certainly. There is no published thread standard, so test the joint before you rely on it on a job.

How do I fit it?

Warm the cuff and work it onto the hose end, turning it so it follows the helix. Warm water is enough on soft vinyl. Do not force a cold cuff — that is how hose ends get damaged.

My cuff keeps pulling off. Why?

Usually the hose has been cut mid-helix so there is nothing for the thread to grip, or the hose end has gone oval from heat. Cut back a clean turn and refit.

What if I need to join two hoses instead?

That is a mender, not a cuff — see Hose Mender 1.5 Inch (AH50).
