The gasket is what makes the vacuum a vacuum
A vacuum motor sits on this gasket. If it is hardened, torn or has been re-used once too often, the machine draws air around the motor instead of through the hose — and the loss does not announce itself. The machine sounds normal and the carpet comes up wet.
Fit a new gasket whenever a vacuum motor comes out, even if the old one looks serviceable. It is the cheapest part in the job and the one most likely to undo the rest of it.
