What it seals and why
The flap closes off the vacuum chamber manifold inlet when no booster box is fitted. With it missing or perished, the machine draws air through the open inlet instead of through the hose — which is a direct loss of lift at the wand, all day, with nothing to see.

Finding a vacuum leak on a portable
Work from the wand back to the motor, and change one thing at a time:
- Wand and hose — cuffs, split hose, a missing or cracked wand end.
- Recovery tank lid — the lid seal and how the lid sits on the tank.
- Manifold inlet — is the booster flap present, closing fully and seating flat?
- Drain valve and any other tank openings.
A flap that has hardened, curled or split will look like it is in place and still let air past. Compare it with the new part if in doubt.

How do I know the flap is the problem?
Take the wand off and block the end of the vacuum hose with your palm while the vac motor runs. If it pulls hard, the hose and tank are sealing and the loss is at the wand. If it is weak, the leak is in the hose, lid, drain or manifold — including the flap.
