Why a dedicated sponge
Leather cleaning is done with foam and a light touch, not with water and pressure. A fine open-cell sponge generates and carries that foam without holding excess liquid, which is the point — over-wetting leather drives moisture into the hide and causes staining and stiffening that appears days later.
Keep the sponge for leather only. A sponge that has been used with a general cleaner carries residue into a finish that will react to it.
Used with the foaming bottle to generate foam, and the white felt cloth for applying protection cream.
Test first, every time
Leather finishes vary enormously — pigmented, aniline, semi-aniline, nubuck, suede — and a product or a method that is safe on one will strip or stain another. Test on a hidden area and let it dry fully before committing to the visible surface.
