Slide hammer electrode for moisture gradients in timber

A slide hammer electrode fitted with insulated 496 contact pins. The pins make contact with the timber only at their bare tips, so the meter reports the moisture at the depth you have driven to rather than an average of everything above it.

Why professionals use it

Timber dries from the outside in. A surface reading on a board that is wet at the core will tell you the job is finished when it is not. Driving to two depths with insulated pins gives you the gradient, which is the difference between a shell-dry board and a dry board.

The same logic applies in restoration. A subfloor that reads dry at 6 mm can still be holding water at 25 mm, and it will re-wet the surface as soon as the air movers come off.

What is the difference between the 26-ES and the 26-ED?

The 26-ED adds a depth gauge, so you can see how far the pins have gone in rather than judging it. If you are recording readings at set depths for a report, the 26-ED is worth the difference.

Do I need a species correction?

Yes, as with any resistance meter. Note that some species tables specify readings taken with a 2-pin electrode without a 2-pin correction applied — check the table in your meter’s manual.

Will it damage the timber?

It leaves two pin holes at the depth you drove to. On finished work, test where the holes will be covered.

Can I use it on masonry?

It is designed for wood. For plaster, drywall and masonry the 22-E is the right electrode.
