A 1 1/2 inch (38 mm) steel pin, Teflon insulated except for the last 1/8 inch of the tip. The shorter alternative to the 496 when you do not need the depth.

Penetration depth is the figure that decides whether a pin suits the job. It is not the same as the overall length of the pin, and the two are easy to confuse when comparing parts.
Our older listing quoted 38 mm as the penetration figure. 38 mm is the overall length of the pin; penetration is 1/2 inch, or 12.7 mm.
Why the shorter pin is often the right one
On a 19 mm floorboard a 496 pin can pass straight through into the subfloor or the cavity below, and the reading you get is not the reading you wanted. The 1849 stops at 1/2 inch, which keeps the tip in the board. It also does less damage, which matters on finished timber.

1849 or 496?
Use the 1849 on flooring and stock up to about 2 inches. Use the 496 when you need to reach the core of thicker timber.
Are they insulated the same way?
Yes — Teflon along the shank, bare for the last 1/8 inch, so the reading comes from the tip only.
Will they leave marks on a finished floor?
Any pin meter leaves two small holes. Test in an offcut, under the skirting line, or in an area that will be covered wherever you can.
