Reading floor pad colours
Floor pad colour is an industry convention for aggressiveness. As a general rule, the lighter the pad the gentler it is: white polishes, red buffs and cleans lightly, blue and green scrub, brown and black strip. Using a pad more aggressive than the finish requires removes the finish, and the customer sees that as damage rather than as cleaning.
Always start with the least aggressive pad that will do the job, and test in an inconspicuous area.
Polishing and cleaning at once
The tan pad has enough bite to lift light surface soil while it polishes, which suits a maintenance pass on a floor that is in good condition. On a floor that needs real cleaning, clean first and polish second — a polishing pad loaded with soil just moves it around.

This is a 40 cm (16 inch) pad. It needs a 40 cm machine and a matching pad driver. Check the driver size before ordering, as 43 cm (17 inch) machines are also common in the trade.
Using a Polishing Pad
- Make sure the floor is clean and dry first.
- Centre the pad on the driver.
- Work at a steady pace with overlapping passes.
- Turn or change the pad when it loads with soil or finish — a loaded pad smears rather than polishes.
- Dust-mop after polishing to remove fine dust.
