Fiberlock RECON ULTRA Smoke Odour Sealer (White, 3092) is a premium, finish-grade, solvent-free smoke odour sealant and stain blocker. It is water-based with Fiberlock's OdorLock Plus technology, and is the final step on fire damage restoration projects, applied after the structure has been cleaned and the odour treated.
Fiberlock explain the difference this way: typical water-based coatings "wick" smoke odours and stains out of the substrate as they dry, while RECON ULTRA prevents them migrating through the coating, and also contains malodour neutralisation technology. Fiberlock state it gives one-coat odour control on most surfaces and keeps blocking odours through seasonal changes in temperature and humidity.
This listing: 5 US gallon (18.9 L) pail, white, CCW SKU FL3092-5.
Features
- Finish grade, solvent-free, water-based
- Blocks tough stains
- Moisture permeable
- Tintable
- Encapsulates malodours on multiple surfaces, including pet and trauma scene odours (Fiberlock's claim)
- Brush, roller or airless spray
- Accepts a topcoat after 2 hours
RECON ULTRA or standard RECON?
RECON ULTRA is the finish-grade version, made for finished and decorative surfaces as well as structure. It can be rolled and takes a topcoat after 2 hours. Standard RECON (White) and RECON (Clear) are brush or spray only, need 24 hours before topcoating, and are listed for use in ductwork.
Where It Fits in a Smoke Odour Job
Smoke odour encapsulation is a final step in a full smoke and odour management protocol. Fiberlock's protocol has three steps:
- Odour cleaning: remove soot and smoke residue from the substrate.
- Odour neutralisation: treat what remains in the material.
- Odour encapsulation: seal in any residual odour with RECON ULTRA.
Fiberlock recommend cleaning with RECON Heavy Duty Cleaner or Extreme Duty Cleaner, followed by RECON Extreme Duty Odour Counteractant. CCW does not currently list those products. Our Fire & Smoke Damage Chemicals range covers the cleaning and deodorising steps; ask us to match a cleaner and counteractant to the job.
A sealer is not a substitute for removing material that is too badly damaged to clean. Seal what stays, not what goes.
Safety
The SDS currently available for RECON ULTRA White is the US edition (March 2017, OSHA format). It carries the signal word Warning with H319 (causes serious eye irritation), H351 (suspected of causing cancer) and H412 (harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects), and lists it as not regulated for transport. The 2022 data sheet carries a "Danger" heading. We have asked the supplier which applies.
When spraying, Fiberlock specify a NIOSH-approved respirator with any R, P, N or HE filter; in Australia, select to AS/NZS 1716. CCW stocks the 3M 7502 and 3M 7503 half-face respirators and the 3M 60921 organic vapour/P100 cartridge.
Australian SDS: the safety data sheet below is the US edition (March 2017). We have asked ICP Group Australasia for the current Australian SDS for RECON ULTRA White and will replace this link when it arrives. Ask us if you need the Australian document before then.
How to Use
Surface preparation
The substrate must be thoroughly cleaned before RECON ULTRA goes on. Once it is clean, dry and sound, apply RECON ULTRA to encapsulate any residual odour.
Check moisture before you seal. Fiberlock say not to apply when surfaces are above 15% moisture content. After firefighting water, plasterboard and framing are often wetter than they look. A pin meter such as the Delmhorst BDX-20 gives you a recorded reading before the sealer goes on.
Lead paint: Fiberlock's data sheet warns that scraping, sanding or removing old paint may release lead dust, which is toxic. In older Australian buildings, assume lead paint may be present until it is tested, and follow your state WHS requirements for lead before you disturb painted surfaces.
Application tools
- Brush: synthetic, nylon or polyester bristle
- Roller: 3/8 in (10 mm) nap synthetic fibre
- Airless spray: 0.015–0.021 in tip at 2,000–3,000 psi (138–207 bar)
Application
Apply generously and uniformly by brush, roller or airless spray. Apply one coat and make sure the finished surface is properly sealed; some porous or heavily stained surfaces need two. Topcoat floor applications where foot traffic or heavy storage is expected.
RECON ULTRA can be tinted with up to 2 oz of universal liquid colorant per US gallon (about 15 mL per litre). It can go directly onto plasterboard, timber, masonry and concrete. Ferrous metals may need a direct-to-metal primer to prevent flash rusting.
Clean-up
Clean tools and drips with warm soapy water before the sealer dries. Dispose of waste as the SDS and your local authority require.
Coverage and Drying
| Coverage — smooth surfaces | 4.9–9.8 m²/L (200–400 ft²/US gal) |
|---|---|
| One 18.9 L pail, smooth (our calculation) | about 93–185 m² per coat |
| Coverage — porous surfaces | 2.5–4.9 m²/L (100–200 ft²/US gal) |
| One 18.9 L pail, porous (our calculation) | about 46–93 m² per coat |
| Touch dry (21–25 °C, 50% RH) | 30 minutes |
| Recoat | 2 hours |
| Topcoat | 2 hours |
| Minimum application temperature | 7.3 °C (45 °F); in high humidity, apply only when the surface is at or above that temperature |
Variations in temperature and humidity can extend drying time. Fire-damaged substrates sit at the porous end of the coverage range.

Storage and Precautions
Store in a dry place between 4.5 °C and 32 °C and keep from freezing. Stir thoroughly. Do not mix with any other coatings, additives, solvents or colours in oil. Do not apply below 7.3 °C, when drying conditions are poor, or on surfaces above 15% moisture. Use adequate ventilation.
Fiberlock state that RECON ULTRA is FBC System Compatible, meaning it is tested and monitored for chemical compatibility with FlowGuard Gold, BlazeMaster and Corzan CPVC piping systems.
A note on earlier versions of this page
Earlier versions of this page linked a safety data sheet for RECON ULTRA Clear (3093). CCW does not list the clear version, so that link has been removed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I seal over soot without cleaning first?
No. Fiberlock say the substrate must be thoroughly cleaned first, and encapsulation is the last of three steps. Sealing over loose soot also gives the coating a poor surface to bond to.
Can I paint over it?
Yes. RECON ULTRA accepts a topcoat after 2 hours at 21–25 °C and 50% RH. Test a patch first.
Can I roll it?
Yes. Unlike standard RECON, RECON ULTRA can be applied by roller as well as brush and airless spray.
Can it go inside ductwork?
Fiberlock list standard RECON for lined and unlined ductwork. They do not list RECON ULTRA for that use, so use standard RECON in ducts.
How much will I need?
One 18.9 L pail covers roughly 46–93 m² of porous, fire-damaged surface or 93–185 m² of smooth surface per coat. Allow for a second coat where staining is heavy.
