Do not use a screwdriver
The blunt, wide blade is what lets it set the backing without cutting it. A screwdriver cuts the primary backing, and a cut backing is a repair rather than an adjustment.
Using It
- Make sure the carpet is stretched first. The stair tool sets carpet; it does not tighten it. Use a knee kicker to bring loose carpet back to the strip.
- Place the blade on the carpet just in from the strip and push the backing down onto the pins.
- Where more force is needed, strike the checkered head with a hammer. Keep blows square to the head.
- Work along the edge in short overlapping sections, then tuck the edge into the gully.

Why is my stair tool 8 cm when other Roberts stair tools are wider?
Roberts makes stair tools in more than one width; its current Pro Stair Tool is listed at 4 in (about 10 cm). CCW lists this tool at 8 cm. A narrower blade gets into tighter stair crevices and corners; a wider one covers a straight run faster.
Can I use it to re-secure carpet after a water damage job?
Yes, where the carpet has lifted off the strip. If the tack strip itself is loose, rusted or damaged, replace the strip first; the tool cannot fix a strip that will not hold.
Will it damage the carpet?
Not when used as intended. The blunt blade sets the backing without cutting it. Keep hammer blows on the checkered head, not on the blade.
