What an Awl Is For
Locating seams, lifting individual tufts, easing carpet off tack strip and finding the gully along a wall without cutting anything. On a cleaning job it is most often used to lift a snagged tuft so it can be sheared flush rather than pulled.
Never pull a sprout. Lift it with the awl and cut it with carpet shears.
Where It Fits on a Cleaning Job
- Sprouts and snags: lift the tuft, trim it level with the pile.
- Seams: find a seam line before cleaning so you do not over-wet it or scrub across it.
- Edges: lift carpet off tack strip at the wall to check underlay after a water loss, then re-stretch with a knee kicker and set with a stair tool.
