Blood Remover is a water-based alkaline spotting agent. It is used for the removal of protein and albumen-based stains such as blood, egg, milk, ice cream and beer.

Protein Stains and Why Heat Is the Enemy

Blood, egg, milk and ice cream are protein. Protein coagulates with heat and sets into the fibre permanently — so use cool water on these, not hot, and do not put a steam wand over an untreated protein stain hoping to lift it.

Blood Is a Biohazard

Treat any blood contamination as potentially infectious regardless of what you have been told about its source. Gloves, eye protection, and dispose of contaminated towels appropriately.

Alkaline Chemistry and Wool

The SDS lists ammonia (under 5%) among the ingredients, which is what makes it alkaline and gives it the ammonia smell. Alkalis are hard on wool and silk — test first, use as little as will do the job, and rinse thoroughly. Neutralise with an acid rinse afterwards if your normal wool method calls for it.

A Textile Spotting Range

Stelco Chemicals International (Rowville, Victoria) supply this range for professional textile and dry-cleaning spotting, and their safety data sheets give that as the recommended use. Carpet and upholstery cleaners use the same chemistry on the spot, but a spotting board and a steam gun are not the same as a carpet in a client's home — rinse and extract thoroughly, and keep solvent out of the backing.

Method Matters More Than the Product

Apply to a white towel rather than pouring onto the carpet where you can. Work from the outside of the spot inward so you do not spread it. Tamp or agitate gently rather than scrubbing — scrubbing distorts pile and leaves a permanent mark that is more visible than the original stain.

Rinse and extract afterwards. Spotter residue left in the pile attracts soil, and the spot comes back as a dark patch a fortnight later — which the customer reads as your work failing.

Before You Use It

Read the safety data sheet for this product and follow it. Solvent-based spotters in particular require ventilation and appropriate gloves — check the SDS for the glove material, because it is not always the same across products.

Always test on an inconspicuous area first. Fibre, dye and backing all react differently, and a spotter that is safe on nylon is not automatically safe on wool or on a solution-dyed synthetic.

For this product the SDS calls for safety glasses and impervious gloves, and a mist respirator to AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716 if there is a risk of inhaling spray.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use hot water with it?

No. Heat sets protein. Use cool water, and only rinse hot once the stain has gone.

Does it disinfect?

No. It is a spotter, not a disinfectant. Where blood is involved, deal with the contamination hazard as well as the stain.

Is it dangerous goods?

No. The SDS classifies it as not dangerous goods for transport, so there is no DG surcharge.
