Longer pins, different job
3 inch pins reach through insulation, built-up roofing layers and thick timber to read the material underneath rather than the covering. If your readings need to come from below a layer you cannot remove, pin length is what makes that possible.
Change them before they mislead you
Pins are consumable. A bent or blunt pin makes poor contact and reads low; worn or chipped insulation lets the pin read along its length instead of at the tip, which quietly turns a depth reading into a surface reading. Neither failure announces itself – the meter still gives a number. Replace pins on condition, not when they finally break.
Check the pin your probe takes before ordering. The SP52 35 mm pins suit the HA21SP52 hammer probes and the TP30 5/8 inch pins suit the HH14TP30 handheld probes – they are not interchangeable with SP90.
