The filter that protects the vacuum motor
On a spotting machine the tank filter is the last defence between recovered water, hair and grit and a vacuum motor that costs many times what the filter does. A collapsed, torn or missing filter is how motors get destroyed — and the failure is usually blamed on the motor.
Check it every time the tank is emptied. It takes ten seconds and it is the cheapest maintenance on the machine.
