How to read the number

Every flat spray jet in this range carries a four or five digit number, and it tells you exactly what the jet does.

  • The first digits are the spray angle in degrees — 80, 95, 110, 65, 50, 15 or 05.
  • The remaining digits are the flow in US gallons per minute at 40 psi, with the decimal point understood. 02 is 0.2 gpm, 015 is 0.15 gpm, 03 is 0.3 gpm.

So an 8002 is an 80 degree fan flowing 0.2 gpm at 40 psi, and an 11003 is a 110 degree fan flowing 0.3 gpm at 40 psi. Spraying Systems publishes both figures against every part number.

What the numbers do at wand pressure

The 40 psi rating is a reference condition, not what you will see on a truckmount. Flow through a fixed orifice rises with the square root of pressure, so a jet run at 500 psi passes roughly three and a half times its 40 psi figure.

Spraying Systems publishes a flow range of 0.07 to 0.71 gpm for the 11002, against a rated 0.2 gpm at 40 psi — the top of that range is around 500 psi. Work on the same multiple for any jet in the range.

The fan angle changes too. For the 11002 the manufacturer publishes 98 degrees at 20 psi, 110 at 40, 120 at 80 and 123 at 200. A jet run hard sprays wider than its number suggests, which matters when you are setting jet spacing on a wand.

Jets are consumables and the wear is invisible

An orifice wears open. A worn jet passes more solution at lower velocity, which means a wider, softer pattern, more water into the carpet and less of it coming back out. It reads as poor extraction, slow drying or streaking — none of which look like a worn part.

As a working interval: replace brass jets every six months and stainless jets annually on a machine in regular use. Replace the whole set at once, not one at a time — mixing a new jet with worn ones gives you an uneven bar.

Brass or stainless?

Brass is softer and cheaper, and it wears faster. Stainless holds its orifice roughly twice as long, which is why the replacement intervals differ. On a machine that works every day the stainless jet is cheaper per month; on a spare tool that comes out occasionally, brass is fine.
