Overview

Hygiena UltraSnap is an all-in-one surface ATP test swab used with Hygiena luminometers to verify that a surface has actually been cleaned. Swab, snap, squeeze, read — the result is on screen in seconds.

What ATP testing actually tells you

ATP — adenosine triphosphate — is the energy molecule present in all living cells and in residues derived from them. An ATP test does not identify organisms and it is not a microbiological count. What it measures is organic residue: food soil, body fluids, biofilm and the living cells within them.

That is exactly the right question for verifying cleaning. A surface that has been cleaned properly has had the residue removed; a surface that looks clean and still returns a high reading has not. The result arrives in seconds, while the cleaner is still on site and can do something about it.

What it is not: a test for pathogens, a substitute for microbiological sampling, or a measure of disinfection. A sanitiser can kill organisms and leave their ATP behind. Use ATP to verify that cleaning removed the soil — which is the step disinfection depends on.

How the device works

  • Pre-moistened swab. The swab arrives wet, which lifts residue and biofilm off the surface far better than a dry swab and makes collection more consistent between operators.
  • Snap-Valve activation. Snapping the valve releases the liquid reagent onto the collected sample. There is no foil seal for the swab to push through, which is where sample loss occurs on some other designs.
  • Liquid-stable reagent. The reagent is supplied in liquid form rather than as a freeze-dried pellet that has to be reconstituted, which is what makes results reproducible device to device.
  • All-in-one. Swab, reagent and reaction tube are one pen-sized unit. Nothing to assemble, nothing to measure.

Using it well

Swab a defined area, the same way every time. ATP results are only comparable if the sampling is comparable. Fix the area — a 10 cm × 10 cm template is the usual approach — and fix the technique: firm pressure, one direction, then rotate the swab and go across at right angles.

Read promptly after activation. The light output from the reaction is not indefinite. Establish a routine — activate, mix, read — and stick to it.

Set your own pass and fail limits. There is no universal RLU number that means "clean". The figure depends on the surface, the soil, the swab type and what you are trying to demonstrate. Establish a baseline on surfaces you know are properly cleaned, and set limits from that.

Sanitiser can suppress the reading. Swabbing a surface with sanitiser still wet on it can give a falsely low result. Sample after cleaning and before sanitising, or allow for it in your procedure.

Does it need a meter?

Yes. UltraSnap is read in a Hygiena luminometer. If you want a test that needs no instrument, look at PRO-Clean or SpotCheck Plus.

What RLU reading counts as a pass?

That is yours to set. Establish a baseline on surfaces you know are properly cleaned and set limits from there — a number copied from someone else's site is not evidence about yours.

Can it detect bacteria?

No. It measures ATP, which is present in organic residue generally. It is a cleaning verification tool, not a microbiological test.

Can I use it on soft furnishings or carpet?
