What Is ATP Testing?
The ATP test is a process of rapidly measuring actively growing microorganisms through the detection of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP.
ATP is a molecule found in and around living cells, and as such it gives a direct measure of biological concentration and health. ATP is quantified by measuring the light produced through its reaction with the naturally occurring firefly enzyme luciferase using a luminometer. The amount of light produced is directly proportional to the amount of ATP present in the sample.
What a reading is and is not: ATP is present in organic residue generally — food soil, body fluids, biofilm and the cells within them — not only in living microorganisms. A reading in relative light units (RLU) tells you how much organic residue is on the surface. It does not identify organisms and it is not a microbial count. Use it to verify that cleaning removed the soil; use laboratory microbiological sampling where a job needs organisms identified or counted.
Why Use ATP Testing?
With ATP testing, a restoration contractor can test the initial condition of surfaces and standing water to determine the level of contamination and thus categorize the loss more accurately as 1, 2 or 3.
The testing can also be used during the cleaning and drying processes to determine progress. And finally, at the completion of the job, testing can verify clean and sanitary materials and surfaces.
Keep the categorisation point in proportion: an ATP result is supporting evidence, not the classification itself. Water category is decided from the source of the water, how long it has been there and what it has contacted, as your restoration standard sets out. A high reading supports treating the loss as contaminated; a low reading on its own does not make a loss Category 1.

Which Tests It Reads
Hygiena lists the SystemSURE Plus as compatible with its UltraSnap surface ATP test and AquaSnap water ATP test, and with its other luminometer-read test devices. The Hygiena tests CCW stocks:
- Hygiena UltraSnap ATP Surface Test Swab (100pk) — the standard surface test; also in a 2,000 pack
- Hygiena SuperSnap (100pk) — higher-sensitivity surface test
- Hygiena AquaSnap Total (100pk) — water and rinse water
The PRO-Clean and SpotCheck Plus tests are colour-change tests read by eye — they do not need the meter.
Third-party swabs: Anaeron lists its CleanTrust ATP Surface Swab as compatible with the SystemSURE Plus. Hygiena lists only its own tests. If you mix brands, set a separate baseline and limits for each swab type — RLU figures from different swab chemistries are not interchangeable.
Using It Well
- Let the tests warm up. Hygiena's UltraSnap instructions call for the device to reach 21–25 °C before testing. A swab straight from the fridge reads low.
- Swab the same way every time. A 10 × 10 cm area in a criss-cross pattern is Hygiena's standard for flat surfaces. Results are only comparable when the sampling is.
- Read promptly. Insert the activated swab within 30 seconds (UltraSnap instructions). The SystemSURE Plus gives the result in about 15 seconds.
- Set your own limits. The meter supports programmable pass, caution and fail limits. Build them from readings on surfaces you know are properly cleaned, not from a number copied from someone else's procedure.
- Sanitiser still on the surface can suppress the reading. Sample after cleaning and before sanitising, or allow for it in your procedure.
Calibration and Data
The meter runs a sensor self-check at start-up. For in-house confirmation between checks, Hygiena's reusable CalCheck replaces the older PCD4000 Calibration Control Kit. A CalCheck verifies the meter; it does not adjust it — a failed check means contact CCW.
Results transfer to Hygiena's SureTrend software over USB using the SystemSURE Plus USB cable. Hygiena now also offers SureTrend as a cloud platform; confirm with CCW which version and licence applies before you build a reporting system around it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What comes with the meter-only listing?
The luminometer. Hygiena supplies the SystemSURE Plus with a protective carrying case and shoulder strap; confirm with CCW what is in the box on current stock. Swabs, the USB cable and the CalCheck are sold separately.
Does it need annual calibration?
Hygiena says no scheduled yearly maintenance is needed. Use the CalCheck to confirm the meter is reading correctly between checks.
Can it tell me whether a surface has bacteria or mould on it?
No. It measures ATP, which is present in organic residue generally. It shows how clean a surface is, not which organisms are on it.
SystemSURE Plus or EnSURE Touch?
Both read Hygiena's ATP tests. The EnSURE Touch has a touch screen, Wi-Fi data transfer and a 10-second read. The SystemSURE Plus is the simpler keypad meter with USB download.
Can I use CleanTrust swabs in it?
Anaeron says yes; Hygiena lists only its own tests. See "Which Tests It Reads" above, and keep separate limits for each swab brand. CleanTrust also make their own Touch YZ3500 luminometer.
