This heavy-duty moisture sensor is built to take site abuse — the manufacturer reports engineers repeatedly ran it over with an SUV without denting it.

A tough exterior is only the beginning of the story: the moment the Shark detects moisture in the carpet, drywall, and wood (even if it is trapped in urine), a bio-hazard light flashes and beep sounds. US distributors add that the more moisture it finds, the faster the beep and flash.

It is made of stainless steel with a non-slip rubber grip and a convenient battery portal.

What It Tells You — and What It Does Not

The Hydro Shark is a wet/dry indicator. It tells you moisture is present at the pins; it does not give a reading you can record. The 17% trigger point is published without the material scale it refers to, so treat a signal as "wet — check properly", not as a moisture content value.

For readings that go in a drying log or insurance report, follow up with a pin meter such as the Delmhorst BDX-20.

Using It for Urine Detection

Dried urine salts attract moisture and conduct, which is why a probe can find contamination in carpet that looks and feels dry. Use it with a UV light to map the area before treatment:

1. Scan the room with a UV black light to find likely deposits.
2. Probe through the carpet into the underlay across and beyond each area. The signal shows how far the contamination has spread underneath, which is usually wider than the surface mark.
3. Mark the boundary so treatment and any underlay replacement cover the whole area.
4. Clean the pins after each job — urine residue on the pins causes false signals on the next one.

Using It for Moisture Mapping

At the start of a water damage job, probe outward from the source until the signal stops, and mark the wet boundary. Re-check the same points during drying. When it stops signalling, confirm with a meter before you call the area dry.

• Wipe and dry the pins after every job, and replace them when they are bent, blunt or corroded — worn pins make poor contact and under-read.
• Remove the battery if the sensor will be stored for a long period.
• Test on a known wet and a known dry material before relying on it on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it a moisture meter?

No. It signals wet or dry at its trigger point. It does not display or store a reading.

Can I use it on drywall and timber?

The manufacturer lists carpet, drywall and wood. On wall linings and timber, use it to find wet areas, then take recorded readings with a pin meter.

How does it compare with the Dri-Eaz HydroSensor?

Both are long-handled wet/dry probes. CCW positions the HydroSensor I and HydroSensor II for carpet and underlay; the Hydro Shark is also listed for drywall, timber and urine detection.

Can I replace the pins?

Yes — Hydro Shark Replacement Probe Pins (OE-5022-EA).

Will it find urine that has been cleaned?

It may still signal where salts remain in the underlay or backing. A signal after cleaning is a reason to investigate further, not proof the clean failed.
