Deoderisers

Odour work fails for one reason more than any other: the source is still there. A deodoriser that only adds fragrance buys a few days; the complaint returns the first humid week.

The sequence that holds up is remove the source, neutralise what remains at a molecular level, then provide a replacement scent. In that order. Masking carries a failure date because step one was skipped.

Urine is the clearest example. Fresh urine sits at pH 5–6. As bacteria metabolise it, it turns alkaline at pH 11–12 and dries into a hard uric crystal that encapsulates the odour-causing bacteria. Dry, it goes quiet and the job looks finished; on a humid day it re-wets and the ammonia returns. Odour tracks moisture, not time. Destroying it takes acidic dissolution or enzyme digestion, then extraction. Dissolve without extracting and you have merely liberated the source.

How to choose a deodoriser

  • Identify the source first. Urine, smoke, mould and rotting organics each need a different first step. The deodoriser is chosen last.
  • Match the class to the odour. Enzymes digest organic residue. Molecular neutralisers convert the mal-odour molecule into a neutral one. Fragrance finishes; it does not fix.
  • Decide stand-alone or combination. Large jobs: stand-alone after the works, undiluted by organic load. Small jobs where odour is secondary: dose into the cleaning solution.
  • Check what the product is rated for. Thermal-fogging rated products run roughly 5–15 mL undiluted per 10 m³, area closed 30–60 minutes. Water-based for inhabited spaces, solvent-based for uninhabited.
  • Buy the pack size your job pattern justifies. 500 mL for spot work, 3.8–5 litre general, 20 litre for weekly odour work.

Where urine is the source, start with urine decontamination chemicals. Fire jobs need the residue removal in fire and smoke damage chemicals, and musty buildings need mould remediation products first.

What we see in the field

The phone call we pay attention to is, “It smelled great when I left, but a week later the odour came back.” Sometimes the treatment was too light, but more often something is still producing odour — urine in an underlay, contamination in a substrate, smoke residue in a cavity, or organic material that wasn't completely removed. A good deodoriser can neutralise what it reaches; it can't compensate for a source you haven't found.
