Sonitron Browning Remover Concentrate is an oxidising type of browning remover. Its active oxygen source completely evaporates, leaving no active residues, and Sonitron positions it as the first choice for cellulosic browning and tannin stains. The active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide at 30–60% (SDS), so it is a strong chemical that must be diluted and handled with care — see Safety below.

  • Oxidising remover
  • No residue

Note: this product must be diluted to a safe level to avoid damage to natural fibres.

What Cellulosic Browning Is

Cellulosic browning is the yellow-brown discolouration that appears on carpet after it has been overwet or has dried slowly. Water dissolves natural colouring (tannins and lignin) from cellulose materials such as jute backing and cotton, and as the carpet dries it wicks to the fibre tips and concentrates there — most heavily at the edge of a water mark. Tea, coffee and similar organic stains leave the same kind of tannin colour.

Sonitron describes the product as a way to remove cellulosic browning rapidly and economically, even on large areas, using the extraction machine.

Directions

Dilution

  • For heavy cellulosic browning, mix 1 part Browning Remover Concentrate with 10 parts water. Where possible use hot water.
  • For light cellulosic browning, mix 1 part Browning Remover Concentrate with 40 parts water. Where possible use hot water.

For organic and dye stains (tea, coffee, cordial etc.)

Always test in an inconspicuous place. Apply Browning Remover Concentrate directly to the stain. Tamp with a spotting brush to allow the product to fully engage the stain. Allow several minutes of dwell time before blotting away with an absorbent cloth. Rapidly dry the treated area to a finish using a hair dryer. Repeat the procedure as long as the stain is responding.

Important: Spotting Dilution

The spotting directions above say to apply the concentrate directly, while the note at the top of this page says it must be diluted. Sonitron's own Browning System instruction sheet uses the Remover at 1 in 10 in hot water for tea, coffee and urine stains, after a first treatment with its Browning Preventive. Because the concentrate is 30–60% hydrogen peroxide, CCW recommends spotting at 1 in 10 and pre-testing until Sonitron confirms whether neat application is intended.

Do not mix Sonitron Browning Remover Concentrate with any other product.

For larger areas and water damage restoration

Apply Browning Remover Concentrate at its pre-tested safe maximum. Agitate with a brush or groomer to allow penetration of the pile. Allow several minutes of dwell time before extraction. Rapidly dry affected areas using air movers or fans.

Sonitron's instruction sheet gives the same method in short form: spray the affected area, allow it to sit for 5 minutes, then vacuum dry — no rinsing is required.

For best results

  • Use Browning Remover Concentrate at its pre-tested safe maximum.
  • Allow a reasonable dwell time for the chemistry to work.
  • Use a tamping brush to work the product into the fibre. For larger areas use a bonnet or rotary brush to work Browning Remover Concentrate into the fibre.
  • Pay particular attention to the extreme edge of water marks, where the browning concentrates.
  • Use a "dry and re-apply" repeat method for complete removal.
  • To avoid unnecessary reattendance, do not leave the site until the final application has dried.

Sonitron's system follows the Remover with its Browning Preventive to reduce the chance of the stain returning. CCW does not currently list Browning Preventive — ask us if you need it.

Note: Sonitron also makes an RTU product called Browning Remover that has its own set of instructions, different to this concentrated product.

Safety

Sonitron's safety data sheet (revision 2, June 2021) classifies the concentrate as hazardous. Signal word: Danger.

  • May intensify fire; oxidiser.
  • Harmful if swallowed.
  • Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
  • May cause respiratory irritation.
  • Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

Wear chemical splash goggles or a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and protective clothing when handling the concentrate, and work with good ventilation. Store it locked up in a cool, ventilated place away from flammable and combustible materials. If it contacts skin or eyes, rinse with water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention. Read the full SDS before use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe on wool?

Sonitron does not publish a fibre suitability list. Hydrogen peroxide can damage natural fibres and lift dyes if it is too strong, which is why the product must be diluted. Pre-test for colourfastness in an inconspicuous area, start at the weaker dilution and increase only if needed.

Do I need to rinse it out?

Sonitron's instructions say no rinsing is required: the active oxygen breaks down and leaves no active residue. Extract and dry the area quickly.

Why does browning come back after cleaning?

Browning wicks up from the backing as the carpet dries. Slow drying gives it time to reach the fibre tips. Extract thoroughly and dry fast with air movers, and pay attention to the edges of water marks.

Can I mix it with my prespray or another spotter?

No. Sonitron states it must not be mixed with any other product. Use it on its own and rinse your sprayer before and after.

Why does it carry a shipping surcharge?

The concentrate is classed as dangerous goods for transport (Class 5.1 oxidiser), so a dangerous goods surcharge applies.
