Overview

The Sapphire Scientific Automatic Waste Pump-Out is an automatic pump-out (APO) kit that pumps recovered wastewater out of the truckmount's waste tank as it fills, so you can keep cleaning instead of stopping to dump.

It is built around a 12 V DC centrifugal pump that mounts on the vehicle floor beside the waste tank. A float switch fitted in the tank turns the pump on and off as the water level rises and falls, and the pump runs from the console battery.

Sapphire Scientific part number 68-158S, supplied as Legend Brands kit 124982 (Kit, Waste Pump Out). Sapphire lists 68-158S as replacing its earlier kit, 68-003.

What problem it solves

Without automatic pump-out, waste tank capacity sets your working pattern: on a large commercial job you stop, shut down and dump, or run a discharge line by hand. With the pump-out fitted, wastewater is moved out as the tank fills and the job keeps going.

What is in the kit

From the Legend Brands kit insert 125098 Rev B:

  • Pump-out assembly (124889) — 12 V DC centrifugal pump on mounting supports, with a 12 V relay, a 1-1/4 inch NPT ball check valve on the outlet, and a pre-wired harness (battery cables, harness pigtail and relay jumper)
  • Valve bracket assembly (124883) — discharge bracket with a 1 inch ball valve, brass 1 inch NPT × 3/4 inch garden hose outlet and brass cap
  • Float switch — level sensor shut-off for the waste tank (105753)
  • Waste pump-out wiring harness (107155)
  • 1-1/4 inch NPT × 1 inch hose barb for the waste tank port
  • 6 ft of 1 inch hose and four #20 stainless hose clamps
  • Six 1/4 × 1 inch Tek screws for mounting the pump and discharge bracket

Requirements

  • A Group 24 battery must be installed to use the pump. The pump connects directly to the console battery with its own 5 ft battery cable.
  • A waste tank with a drain port for the pump suction (1-1/4 inch NPT) and a float switch port directly above it. On the tanks covered by the instructions, the drain port is typically 4 to 6 inches up from the floor on the side nearest the rear door.
  • A pump-out switch on the console. The installation instructions switch the pump-out on and off from the console.

Machine suitability

The pump mounts beside the tank and runs from the console battery, so the kit is not tied to one make of truckmount. It suits Sapphire Scientific and Prochem machines, HydraMaster machines and other truckmounts that meet the requirements above.

Waste tank ports and console layouts differ between makes and models. Send us your machine make, model and serial number and we will confirm the installation before you order.

Installation

Installation is not included in the price.

Installation should be carried out by CCW or an authorised representative. The kit ties into the machine's waste tank and electrical supply, and an incorrect installation has warranty implications — talk to us before you start.

Key points from the Legend Brands installation instructions (125097 Rev A):

  • Mount the pump as close to the waste tank port as possible — two feet or less is optimal — and avoid bends in the suction hose that could kink or flatten it.
  • Do not mount the pump on the wheel well; it affects the pump's suction.
  • The 5 ft battery cable must reach the console battery without being extended.
  • Check under the vehicle for cross-members, fuel lines and electrical lines before screwing the pump to the floor.
  • Drain the waste tank below the pump port before removing the port plug, and use thread sealant on the hose barb and float switch.

Using the pump-out

Discharge through a 3/4 inch garden hose. Connect the hose and route it to an appropriate drain with no kinks, then open the discharge valve. Close the valve before disconnecting the hose — it is there so residual water in the discharge line does not drain into the vehicle.

Troubleshooting

  • Pump does not run: check the inline fuse, battery voltage, float switch, harness connections, the pump-out switch on the console and the relay on the pump base.
  • Pump runs but does not pump: check the check valve on the pump outlet, look for blocked, kinked or collapsed hoses, and make sure the discharge valve is open.
  • The pump has been tested for operation under vacuum up to 14 inHg. Excessive vacuum can affect performance or operation.

Discharge requirements in Australia

Discharging cleaning wastewater to the sewer is regulated by the local water authority, and trade waste requirements differ between states and between councils. Some sites require a trade waste agreement or pre-treatment before discharge is permitted.

The pump-out gives you the means to discharge to a sanitary sewer. Whether you may do so at a given site is a question for the water authority and the building owner, not for the equipment. Confirm before you rely on it as your disposal method.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my truckmount?

It is not limited to Sapphire machines. It needs a Group 24 battery, a waste tank with a drain port and float switch port, and a pump-out switch on the console. Send us your machine details and we will confirm.

Does the pump go inside the waste tank?

No. The pump mounts on the vehicle floor beside the tank and draws from the tank's drain port. Only the float switch is fitted in the tank.

What battery does it need?

A Group 24 battery must be installed. The pump connects to the console battery directly.

Is installation included?

No. Installation is not included in the price and should be carried out by CCW or an authorised representative.

What does 68-158S replace?

Sapphire Scientific lists 68-158S as replacing its earlier automatic pump-out kit, 68-003.

Can I discharge to any sink or gully?

Not automatically. Check the trade waste requirements for the site and the local water authority first.
