The gasket is what makes the vacuum a vacuum
A vacuum motor sits on this gasket. If it is hardened, torn or has been re-used once too often, the machine draws air around the motor instead of through the hose, and the loss does not announce itself. The machine sounds normal and the carpet comes up wet.
Fit a new gasket whenever a vacuum motor comes out, even if the old one looks serviceable. It is the cheapest part in the job and the one most likely to undo the rest of it.
Fitting
- Isolate the machine at the plug.
- Remove the old gasket completely and clean the seat.
- Seat the motor evenly and tighten the clamping evenly so the gasket compresses all the way round.
- Check suction at the tool before going back to work.
