Where the reducer belongs in the run
Vacuum performance is set by the smallest diameter in the line and by total length. Run the long section in 2.5 inch and step down close to the tool, and you keep most of the run at the larger bore where the airflow is won. Step down at the machine and you have a 2 inch system with an expensive 2.5 inch hose attached.
Aluminium rather than plastic matters here — a reducer sits at a joint that gets stood on, dropped and dragged through doorways, and a cracked reducer leaks air you will never hear over the machine.
