Reading floor pad colours
Floor pad colour is an industry convention for aggressiveness. As a general rule, the lighter the pad the gentler it is: white polishes, red buffs and cleans lightly, blue and green scrub, brown and black strip. Using a pad more aggressive than the finish requires removes the finish, and the customer sees that as damage rather than as cleaning.
Always start with the least aggressive pad that will do the job, and test in an inconspicuous area.
Stripping removes the finish — make sure that is what you want
A brown pad is there to take coatings off. On a floor where the customer expected a clean and a polish, that is an expensive misunderstanding. Confirm what is on the floor and what the customer is paying for before a stripping pad goes on the machine.
Brown or Black?
In the Glomesh regular speed range the brown dry strip pad is softer than the black stripping pad, and Glomesh's distributor describes it as suited to uneven floor surfaces, where a stiffer pad bridges the low spots. It is a dry pad — it is not listed for use with stripping solution.
Machine and Pad Driver
This is a 40 cm (16 inch) pad. It needs a 40 cm machine and a matching pad driver. Check the driver size before ordering, as 43 cm (17 inch) machines are also common in the trade.
Using a Stripping Pad
- Confirm the finish and the customer's expectation before you start.
- Sweep or dust-mop the floor so grit is not ground into it.
- Centre the pad on the driver and run the machine within its rated speed.
- Keep the machine moving. A stationary stripping pad will cut unevenly.
- Check the pad and turn it when it loads up.
- Remove the dust and residue before any new finish goes down.
Gentler options: tan polishing and white super polish.
