Product Overview

Perox is a high-strength 50% hydrogen peroxide solution. It is popular in commercial laundries for destaining, whitening and low-temperature sanitising of garments and linen, and is widely used as a specialty stain remover on carpet, fabric and porous hard surfaces. Perox is readily biodegradable and is considered a greener alternative for many applications.

Read this before you order: the concentrate and the working solution are two different animals. Diluted at 20 to 60 ml per litre, Perox becomes a 1 to 3% peroxide solution — an ordinary, low-hazard spotter that needs no rinse. Undiluted, the drum you receive is a corrosive Class 5.1 oxidiser that burns skin, damages eyes permanently, and can ignite combustible material. Almost everything on this page follows from that distinction.

Benefits

  • Stain removal — uses the power of hydrogen peroxide to neutralise the toughest urine and pet stains. It will also remove many colour stains such as wine and cordial.
  • Odour removal — hydrogen peroxide provides powerful oxidation of bacteria and odour-causing germs.
  • Non-residual — leaves no residues behind and does not need to be rinsed at working dilution.
  • Colour safe — suitable for use on colourfast fabrics and carpets at working dilution.
  • Fibre safe — suitable on natural and synthetic fibres. Fine fabrics must be pre-tested for fibre and colour stability before use.

Directions for Use

Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for substrate sensitivity. Never add Perox to undiluted cleaning solutions.

As a booster (encap or prespray)

  1. Mix the Actichem cleaning detergent with water to the recommended dilution.
  2. Add 20 to 30 ml Perox per litre of ready-to-use solution.
  3. Stir briefly. Use within 60 minutes. Follow normal cleaning procedures.

As a stain remover

  1. Add 40 to 60 ml Perox per litre of clean water.
  2. Apply directly to the spot.
  3. Agitate and allow 10 minutes of activity time. Some spots may take up to 2 hours.
  4. No rinse is required.

The speed of spot treatment can be increased by spraying protein spotter onto the area after the Perox has been applied. This method can potentially cause some colour loss in carpets and fabrics.

Storage — and why it matters more than usual

Perox is sensitive to heat and light. Store it out of direct sunlight and avoid storing it in your van for lengthy periods. Keep the drum inside, carry only a small bottle in the van, and replace that bottle at least monthly.

This is not just a performance note. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to oxygen and water, and decomposition accelerates with heat, light and contamination. A sealed container of decomposing peroxide builds pressure. A hot van in an Australian summer is the worst place you could put it.

Safety

Our page has always carried the dangerous-goods shipping warning and the line “Safety profile: Class 5.1 Oxidising agent”. That is correct as far as it goes — but a transport class tells you nothing about PPE, first aid, or what this product reacts with. This is the highest-hazard chemical we stock in the Actichem range, and it now has a full safety section.

Perox is classified as a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL and DANGEROUS GOODS under the Model WHS Regulations and the ADG Code. It is a Poisons Schedule 6 substance.

Personal protective equipment

The SDS specifies chemical goggles and a full face shield, elbow-length neoprene gloves, overalls, a PVC apron, and access to an eyewash unit. The face shield is specified in addition to goggles. At 50%, a splash to unprotected skin blanches it white almost immediately.

First aid

Eyes. Flush continuously with running water, holding the eyelids apart, for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention without delay — H314 means eye damage can be permanent.

Skin. Remove contaminated clothing immediately and flush with large amounts of water. Seek medical attention.

Inhalation. Move to fresh air and rest. Seek medical attention if breathing is difficult.

🔴 Fire and Reactivity — the part most people do not know

Perox is an oxidiser. It does not burn, but it makes other things burn far more readily — and it can start a fire without any ignition source at all.

The SDS states plainly: “Contact with combustibles such as wood, paper, oil or finely divided metal may produce spontaneous combustion or violent decomposition.”

In practical terms, on a job site:

  • Do not leave rags, towels or paper soaked in concentrated Perox in a bin, a bucket or the back of a van. This is the single most likely way this product starts a fire.
  • Do not let it contact rust, dirt, dust, iron, copper or metal salts. The SDS names all of these — they catalyse rapid decomposition. A rusty drum, a dirty funnel or an old metal sprayer is a genuine hazard, not a housekeeping nicety.
  • Do not mix with acids, alcohols, organic solvents or reducing agents.
  • Never return unused concentrate to the drum. Contamination from the working container can set off decomposition in the whole container.
  • Never seal decanted concentrate in an airtight container. Oxygen evolution will pressurise it.

Do not mix Perox with Actichem Chlorosan, Mould Exterminator or any hypochlorite, and do not mix it with any of the acid restorers — Grout Restore 60, Grout Restore 20, Tile & Grout Restore, Crete Clean or Rust Remover.
