Actichem Biosan II 20 ltr

Product Overview

Actichem’s Biosan II is a hospital grade disinfectant and micro-organism decontaminant. It is a single-step, hospital-grade disinfectant with strong cleaning power, effective against a wide variety of pathogenic micro-organisms including viruses, bacteria, fungi, mould and mildew.

Kills SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus). TGA listed — AUST L 332364.

This 20 litre drum is the production pack. At 1:16 it makes 340 litres of disinfection solution; at 1:64, roughly 1,300 litres.

Before you order, understand what is in the drum. Biosan II is supplied as a concentrate, diluted 1:16 to 1:64 before use. The working solution is mild, low-odour and safe around food areas. The concentrate is a corrosive Class 8 dangerous good. Almost everything below follows from that distinction, and earlier versions of this page did not make it.

Ten minutes dwell time, surface kept visibly wet. That is the step that actually disinfects. A listed product applied for thirty seconds is a clean, not a disinfection — and on a warm or porous surface, keeping it wet for ten minutes usually means a second pass.

Application Areas and Surface Suitability

Disinfects bio-contaminated surfaces affected by dirty water, flood water, sewage, and human and animal body fluids. Kills mould.

Actichem list the following as suitable at working dilution: carpet, natural stone, wool, upholstery, ceramic, porcelain, concrete, masonry, leather, plasterboard, rubber and vinyl.

• Not to be used on medical devices or other therapeutic goods.

Special Use Notes

🔴 Biosan II will affect the stain-resistant treatment on 5th and 6th generation nylon. This is the most commercially important line on the page for a carpet cleaner. Those carpets carry a manufacturer’s stain-resist warranty, and stripping the treatment is not something a rinse will fix. Identify the fibre and the generation before you disinfect residential or hospitality nylon, and if you cannot, pre-test in a wardrobe and tell the client what you have found.

Do not mix Biosan II with detergents or other chemicals. Biosan II is a quaternary ammonium compound, and QACs are deactivated by anionic detergent residue. That is not just a safety instruction — a QAC applied over an unrinsed anionic prespray simply does not disinfect. Clean, rinse, then disinfect, and rinse your equipment before changing over.

How to Use

1. Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for substrate sensitivity to chemicals.
2. Observe all safety directions and read the SDS before use.
3. Pre-cleaning and prior removal of organic load will enhance results. Organic soil consumes biocide.
4. Follow certified disaster restoration guidelines for positive sanitisation.

Dilution

• 1:16 (64 ml per litre) — positive disinfection, decontamination and mould remediation
• 1:64 to 1:50 (16 to 20 ml per litre) — clean surface disinfection and odour control

Our specification block previously listed 1:16 to 1:32. Actichem’s current directions give the two ratios above, and we have published those.

Application

1. Apply the solution to a workable area using a sprayer, sponge or scrubber machine.
2. Agitate and allow 10 minutes dwell time, keeping the surface wet.
3. Rinse the surface using clean water.
4. At 1:64, Biosan II does not need to be rinsed. If left to air dry, a residual coating remains for extended protection from micro-organisms.

Food premises: the 1:64 no-rinse method is what makes Biosan II convenient in food environments. Where a food contact surface is involved, follow your food safety plan — many require a potable rinse regardless of the product.

Safety

Please read this section even if you have used this product before. Earlier versions of this page described Biosan II as completely non-toxic, non-corrosive, neutral pH and non-hazardous. All four of those statements were wrong for the concentrate, and we have corrected them.

They are a fair description of the diluted working solution, which is what most users ever touch. They are not a description of what arrives in the drum.

Biosan II concentrate is classified as a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL and DANGEROUS GOODS under the Model WHS Regulations and the ADG Code.

On “non-corrosive and safe on metal surfaces”. The diluted solution is fine on metal. The concentrate is classified corrosive and ships as Class 8. Do not decant it into unlined metal containers and do not leave concentrate standing on metal.

Concentrate and working solution are not the same product

If you want the performance without handling a Class 8 corrosive, Biosan II Wipes and the ready-to-use presentation exist for exactly that reason.

Personal protective equipment

The SDS specifies neoprene chemical protective gloves, safety glasses with side shields or chemical goggles, barrier cream and access to an eyewash unit. Wear them when decanting and diluting — that is the only step at which you handle the concentrate, and it is the step people skip because the working solution is so mild. Decanting from a 20 litre drum is the highest-splash version of that step.

First aid

Eyes. Hold the eyelids apart and flush continuously with running water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention without delay — H314 means eye damage can be permanent.

Skin. Remove contaminated clothing and flush with large amounts of water. Seek medical attention.

Compatibility

The SDS lists no known incompatible materials for storage, which is unusual in this range and worth noting honestly. The practical restrictions come from the chemistry rather than the hazard:

• Anionic detergents deactivate QACs. Do not mix Biosan II with detergents or other chemicals, and rinse equipment before changeover.
• Do not mix with acids or oxidisers as a general rule — not because Biosan II is unusually reactive, but because nothing is gained and the disinfectant is destroyed. That includes Chlorosan, Perox, Grout Restore 20 and the other acid restorers.
• Dilute into water, not into another product.
